I recently leased a new 2011 Pilot EX-L w/Nav. I'm a bit disappointed at the audio quality. I've never had an aftermarket system in any car, but my prior Acura TL seemed like it had a much better sounding system.
Here's what I'm noticing: Bass is able to be pretty darn loud at low volumes, so I know the sub is working. Highs are reasonably present (could certainly be better), but the big issue is that as the volume turns up, it seems to way lessen the bass response and dramatically increase the highs. So much so, I'm wondering if the sub has a serious limiter to avoid blowing it and the limiter is set too low. Almost all the bass seems to be coming from the sub and hardly any from the other speakers - which brings me to my next question. It supposedly has 10 speakers - I see two in the front at the base of the doors (one on each side), and two in the back at the liftgate (that point to the front of the vehicle), as well as two in the 2nd row on the doors. That's only six. Throw in the sub - which appears to be on the right side of the cargo compartment, and that's 7. Where are the other 3? Does anyone have a wiring diagram?

This system is just OK IMO. It really should be better but it is limit by the ampification and the quality of the speakers. Also, I find that the source imput has a lot to do with the sound. FM is the worst, followed by XM, CD mostly sound good ( depending on the recording quality) and MP3 are mostly very good.

The sub/amp combo is just weak. Thats all. It's enough for many people out there, but if you want more you will need to replace them with some aftermarket combo. The amplifier is probably not giving the sub a chance to get louder and deeper, while the sub itself is more than likely on the weak side also.
I have found the rest of the speakers to be of pretty good quality. They are accurate, balanced and can get loud. There is good clarity and detail throughout the entire sound spectrum (excluding the bass from the sub). Play with the equalizer and tweak it to your ears liking (I am not sure how the EX-L has the capability to tweak the equalizer, the Touring I have does it through the nav screen interface). -To answer your question, the other 3 speakers are up in the dash. You should have a center speaker in the middle with two other tweeters in the corners near the window. Also, it is easier to fill out the cabin of a car with sound than an suv. The car has a smaller sound area that is easier to fill. The suv has a pretty big cavern that must push the bass from the back to the front. A Pilot has 153 cubic feet of volume, whereas a TL has 98 (new one). Thats a lot more bass to push out, and the lower part of the frequency is the toughest to get deep, quality, loud sound from. |
