Default Anyone know how to hack OEM backup camera?

I will be installing a 10.2" drop down TV screen with built in DVD for the kids really soon. My only concern is that when the kids are watching a movie, I won't be able to see out of my rear view mirror. I have OEM NAV with backup camera. I've heard that the backup camera can be hacked to turn on via a switch which I think would be nice. My thinking is that while the kids are watching a movie, I can flip on the backup camera and that will act as my rear view mirror. I would still like the camera to automatically come on in reverse too if that's possible. Can it be split and wired to the Reverse, and to a switch? I searched, but didn't find any specific hacks for the OEM camera....only aftermarket ones. So, if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it......

why would you want to look at the back when driving? concentrate in the the road infront of you!

I wouldn't be staring at it...more for changing lanes, etc. I like to be aware of my surroundings at all times. What if there was a motorcycle behind me that was just outside viewing from the side mirrors. I use to ride, so I try and give road respect to others as I would like for myself.....

It's more of a safety precaution...don't you use your rearview when you're driving?

he said, flip a switch, look down to the nav screen, take away your vision of the road, instead of concentrating on the road ahead, look on the outside rear mirrors if the dvd is blocking the view.

the answer is to his dilemma of having the dvd blocking his view while driving not a question of looking back when driving. read the OP first before arguing.

My driving instructor always said Mirror Signal manoever. The outside mirrors were merely an additional check.

So yes you should use the interior mirror.

I like the way the OP is thinking and going about solving a common problem

we know that already. the point is adding an extra vision and distracting the driving by looking down to the nav instead of just glancing the inside rearview mirror which is ineffective since it is blocked by the dvd screen. how do closed vans manage without the interior mirror? by using the outside rearview mirrors which are as effective. the point is if the nav is continuously showing the rear vision, that would be okay since a few secs of glancing may help. but to flick a switch, wait for the nav to turn on-just too slow.

it is not a matter of not using the rearview mirror, this discussion is beyond that. and to imply not using the mirror is just being too literal and out of context.

Too slow for what? I have no idea what point you're even trying to make here. All I know is that having a DVD on for the kids with my NAV screen displaying what's behind me is far less distracting then having my kids throw stuff around the car, kick the back of my seat, smack each other around, etc....

I guess you're just one of those people who needs the last word. To each his own.

I'll agree to disagree. Thanks for your contribution to the thread.

I guess both of you guys haven't driven the lexus LX570, escalade hybrid, porsche cayenne and MB ML. the transition from nav screen to camera is not instant unless you want it continuously monitoring it without the switch. In the meantime, at 40-60 miles per hour, you have already travelled several meters/feet before you can look back to the road. that is why there is a lock in the nav system for safety reasons and that is what you are trying to circumvent to make sense for safety driving? these are lockpicks you are suggesting and requesting if it has been done and yes it has been done not just with hondu's but all other car companies trying to bypass the "safety feature!" right?

I buy cars for functionality and reliability....not "for show". Thanks for playing.
