Default Adding an amp - 08 Pilot SE w/ CD Chgr & DVD

Anyone have advice on the best way to set-up the output for an aftermarket amp? Is the stock sub already on a small amp, and therefore receives output via RCA/patch cable?

If not, any recommendations on whether to use speaker level input on an amp, or a converter or processor? I'd like to install either a 4 or 5 ch amp to power everything and eventually upgrade/replace the sub.

Thanks to all!

IMO unless you are also upgrading speakers it's a wasted effort to add a power amp. I would upgrade all the door speakers first to something that can handle more power and is higher quality than OEM. That should make the stock receiver sound a lot better before anything else is done.

If you just want more power after upgrades, line level inputs works just fine.

Thanks for the reply. All of the speakers will be replaced, but I'm talkin power for now.

Just wondering if there is a solution I'm missing and weighing options. I want the best quality signal going to the amp.

Like most things it depends on your budget. The "best" method is to rip the radio out and replace it with something with built in processing for crossovers and eq. Keeping the stock radio will always compromise the sound because it doesn't have pre-amp outputs and speaker level will have more distortion. I don't see much difference between doing the conversion to low level inside a good amp or using a converter. If the amp has built in processing even better and simpler.

Thanks nsaspook. I agree, this would be easiest with a new head unit but I've been leery of going that route because I still want control of the rear DVD. Is this even possible? Anyone have experience with this upgrade and/or any replacement suggestions?

Many thanks!

It's possible but can get pricy and complicated fast. I don't have factory RES or NAV in my car so I can't help you on what works best.
