Default Pioneer AVIC-F90BT Install

Hi, I just installed a F90BT in my 2003 Pilot EX. Sorry but no pictures yet, I'll try to post it later, hopefully I can walk you all through it.

Check list of items purchased.
AVIC-F90BT from eBay with the MS 30% off - $427 shipped
Panasonic backup CCD camera from eBay $100.
Honda harness & dash kit from Crutchfied - $32
PAC-SWI-PS (steering wheel control), eBay $50

Total=$609 for a top end setup. Local stereo shop wanted over $2000. They were charging labor left and right for the smallest things.

Here we go....
Do the harness wiring in the comfort of your home first. Just follow the instruction of which color goes with which. Make sure the illumination from the deck goes to the illumination of the honda harness not the dimmer. All of this should take about an hour. Pulling the factory stereo was easy. Crutchfield includes instructions but basically just pry from the top edge of the frame. There are 4 clips holding the face plate on. Once pulled, you will see the 4 screws holding the factory deck. Remove and unplug.

Open your glove box and unclip both side so it will drop down all the way. This is so you can run your: VSS wire, backup 12v sensing wire, iPod AV cables, backup camera cables.

Plug your harness in, run one wire for the VSS (speed controller), one wire to for the backup. I didn't want to remove the lower dash so I ran the VSS wire from the engine compartment back (mine was located in the right hand side of the engine compartment right in front of the shock tower. The backup 12v power is located in the front passenger foot panel. (I'll update this thread with all the colors you need and photos).

For the GPS antenna, I place mine in the center of the dash right where the windshield is. There is a light sensor there, I remove it, dremel a notch on the side, and ran my GPS antenna wire next to it.

Remember to program the PAC-SWI-PS before putting the dash back

Now plug in all the harnesses to the back of the deck, remembering to put the GPS antenna wire, and antenna wire.

Turn on your car to test it out and all if it goes well should be functioning.

Also, go to the www.avic411.com site to mod your 90BT. I've done some pretty simple mods that really enhances the experience of the unit. Custom opening screen, cool features on the map screen, etc.

The actual install probably took about 2 hours but much of it was just me wanted to run the wires nicely and being careful pulling the car apart.

Hope this helps someone out there

Here are some pictures.....

Thank you for this writeup! I'm about to attempt the same thing this weekend and I have the same setup as you (though I think my car is a 2003 LX.) You mentioned you had pictures for the install? Is it possible to post those? I would be really grateful for more details with the vss, reverse wire, Pac swi-ps install, etc. I also have a couple other questions if you don't mind answering.

What backup camera did you go with? I'd like to get one but I've seen a few ranging from the $20 to $100+ on ebay. Are you happy with the performance of the AVIC and your camera?

Did you have to run a wire all the way back to the rear bumper for the camera? My car came with navi and I think I remember that the camera was an option. Is there a wire I can use already in place?

Did you have to use the blue and white wire (system remote control on the AVIC)? I don't see that on the Scosche HA08B harness I'm using (though the back of the harness package says it should be there...)

Thanks!

I got the Panasonic brand camera.
http://tinyurl.com/a5uaqn It was the smallest camera in line with the Eclipse and Pioneer brand quality. Very nice quality and the wiring it comes with is top notch. The wide angle is almost to wide. Takes a bit getting use to it. My Lexus LS430 factory camera is still better as the angle is not so wide. You get what you pay for and this was only $100. It is a CCD vs the cheaper $25 CMOS camera. To be honest, the wiring of the backup camera took longer than the deck install. No drilling of any holes required. I just took the trunk panels off, routed the wires through. It was tedious but doable. I did not see any wiring for factory camera back there.

For the VSS, instead of pulling the center dash out, which I hated doing on my other installs before this deck, I just ran the wire to the engine compartment. The VSS module is very easy to find and I'll get you a picture of that. Same goes with the reverse wire in the kick panel. Nothing to it in the PAC wiring install, I think it was just 3 wires to hook up. The most important of the PAC was the White wire (if I recall) that you need to tap into the existing harness (number 3 pin slot if I remember). The AVIC remote wire is for turning on an amplifier, not for steering wheel control. All you have to do is plug the PAC into the jack in the back of the AVIC labeled Remote.

Here is where I tapped the VSS wire in the engine compartment.

Running through the firewall at this rubberized opening. Should come out the other side where the glove box is.

Tap here for 12v reverse at the front passenger footwell.

Thanks. I'm looking into the Boyo VTL300C and saw that there were instructions on how to route the wires on the instructions for the OEM camera.

Did you connect the blue power antenna wire from the Honda harness to the blue antenna control wire on the AVIC harness? The install instructions seem a bit conflicted on this.

Pcambell, I'll have to check on the wiring of the antenna control for you.

Hi,

I thought about putting it there but I was worried that the glare from the license plate light might shine onto the lens at night obscuring it a bit. Do you have any issues with that? If no issues I may place it exactly there too as its better hidden and a little bit more toward the center of the car. Since mine is now mounted using 3M tape, moving it would be a cinch.

Is that the same Panasonic camera?

Thanks for the image charly. I see that you have no glare from the lights so I may reposition mine. I do wish there are interchangeable lens I had mentioned above, the wide angle was a little too much for me, a lot of fisheye, though the quality of the image is very nice vs cheaper CMOS models.

No problem, and about the wide angle with just a little practice you'll get used to it.

Thanks for the pics! These instructions are helping me a lot. You did a very clean and professional looking install.

Have you run into the issue where your unit power cycles on/off/on when the key is in the ACC position, then the ignition is turned on? I'd like to avoid the reboot if possible.

That has not happen to me. Although I did have a thought of putting in place an On/Off switch so I can choose to turn the unit on as there are times when I know I will be turning to ACC and off several times and don't want the unit to be on/off/on/off etc. Maybe get a factory switch that goes in the blanks to the right of the unit.

Odd, I hooked up my multi meter to the ACC line and it drops to 0 briefly when the engine cranks. Did you tap into an ignition wire? I'm using the Scosche wiring harness.

I'm thinking I might have to look into something like a tank circuit to keep the power from momentarily dropping.
