Default Wrench for new OEM oil filter?

Can anybody recommend a good oil filter wrench for the new small Honda filter (made by Fram)?
I've tried two cup-style wrenches and neither would loosen the new-style Honda filter. One was from Wal-Mart (plastic) and one from AutoZone (steel). Both of these wrenches slip off the filter- it seems the shoulder below the flats is too wide to allow the wrench to fully engage into the cup. I think it is size "F", whatever that means.

I know H and A has some good ones online, but I was really hoping to pick one up locally. Should I go with a different style- strap or pliers type?

Try getting one that looks like a crescent wrench. I have one and use it on my Toyota Tacoma and it works great. I just got my '05 Pilot and haven't changed the oil yet so I'm not sure how it will work. Keep us updated if it works for you or not.

They is some that are adjustable and look like a pair of channel lock pliers with curved jaws and can be used on other filters also.

Default For the new "smaller" filters

I was able to find a Pennzoil oil filter wrench size 00 and it fit the new smaller OEM oil filters like a champ. At first I thought it was a little loose, but once the oil filter wrench in on the filter tightly, it's TIGHT.

Here's the kicker... it cost me $4+change

Good luck,
Mike

I have one of these guys:

It's my "first oil change on a car when they torque the factory filter to 200lb-ft" wrench. The tighter you turn, the harder it grabs. I've had it utterly crush the end caps on oil filters.

Going forward, you shouldn't need more than the little strappy wrench if you hand tighten the filter.

I find the end cap wrenches kind of a crapshoot, as you've seen, since there is no standardization on the fluting of the end cap.

I have to politely disagree with this statement. They're only a crapshoot if you cannot find the correct size. The number of flutes cannot be standardized because there are numerous amounts of oil filter sizes. For the NEW Honda OEM ones, they are a 14 flute size 00 from Pennzoil. They are not commonly available at, say a Wal-Mart or Target, but certain auto parts store carry the entire range. I've been able to find the exact filter wrench for Toyota OEM filters as well.

Believe me, this is the one to get. If you have enough space to grab the filter with this wrench it will work every time.

I've done oil changes for years and NEVER ever needed an oil filter wrench... The only "wrench" you need is a piece of medium to rough grit sandpaper. Wrap it around the oil filter and give it a good turn and viola... off it comes, no slipping.

I just tested out last night that sears filter wrench jammie on a new filter I have for my Pilot, and the filter diameter is too small! I could build up the difference with a sheet of rubber I can wrap around the filter, but this is vaguely disappointing.

At any rate, I shouldn't need any shenanigans after the first change. Whenever I've had a filter that was too tight after having been hand-tight, I put on a pair of rubber gloves for traction (it's how I open jars for my wife, too)

Default I'd be happy to pick up the exact...

oil filter wrench that fits the smaller OEM Honda filters for you and send it your way. Let me know and we'll work something out. Not here to make money, but just want to help a fellow Piloteer out!

Default Oil Filter Wrench

I picked up one of these at the auto parts store for about $9. It was in Pennzoil packaging, but my guess is they probably source this from someone else -- I've seen the exact thing elsewhere under other names.

It works great on the small Honda filter and makes it easy to reach the filter from the right front wheel well.

A strap wrench might also work well, here's an example:

Plus, you could use it for pipes, round things you need to turn, etc.
