Default Oil Filter Picture - Side by Side

Ok, so I'm just slightly concerned about the new smaller OEM filter. I bought one anyway and will probably take it back. Now that I see the difference between the size next to the Mobil1, how could I bring myself to use the smaller OEM?

The dealer says not to worry and Honda USA will back the new filter regardless of size. Does this go back to the old saying "Bigger is Better!" ???

Looks like the M-1 filer is using a flat gasket, and the Honda filter is using an O-ring.

Hmmm?????

Is the new filter taller?

Maybe there is not that much difference in filter medium size?

Question hmmmm......

Stuff like that worries me,why would Honda change stuff that's so vital to the car's longevity ?,this weekend i will change the oil in our Pilot and i'm curios as in what size the "OEM" if it's larger that the "dealer's OEM " ...i'll post the results,i have bought 2 Amsoil oil filters (pricey @ $21.00 cnd ) and wednesday i will pick the special order of 3 K&N oil filters @ $12.99cnd/ea.

Here's a nice comparison of the old and new Honda OEM filters. Found the link in an old post here somewhere- can't find the original post- sorry.

Because they know a whole lot more about what the car needs than you, I, or the "Internet"!

If you must, but remember, the factory filter change intervle is up to 15,000 miles, so I would not be concerned about it.

It's all the progression of design and application. The new filter most likely has been better matched to the job of getting the Pilot through the warranty period, not too much, not too little. And it most likely costs less to make and less to ship and less to store and works in more places. That's progress by the definition of the one making the vehicle. Besides, there are not standards for oil filters. Most people don't give the filter much though, one way or the other. The price spread if from about $1.75 to $12.00 and not one of them has an API or ACEA or anyother rating.

Remember, the new car buyer is Honda's customer, not the guy somewhere down the line.
