Default 4.6 Million Kilometres...

About a week or so ago in the Drive section of our local paper there was a picture of this greek caby and his 28 years old Mercedes Benz Diesel that clocked 4.6 Million Kilometres !,the Daimler factory now has the Taxi in their museum (they probably geve him a new Benz). The cabie bought the car used (28 years ago) with 500.000 Kilometres on it...,how in the Heaven a car engine can go on this long ,i supose if never shut it off the engine is constantly lubricated.I myself once asked a local Yellow Cab about how many kilometre they got on their Caprices an Crowns and they all said at least 400~500.000 Kilometres...the secret...they let them run at all times, even when they wait for customers .
What do you guys think ?
Thank you.

While the Old Mercedes diesel engines are legendary I don't believe that this was the "original" engine. I'm sure it has been rebuild or replaced several times at least. The miles on the car are just that the miles on the car, not specifically the engine.

500000Kilometer is not that much on a average car. I've seen plenty of people on this and other boards with 250+K miles. It's not unheeard of. (500000Kilometers=300000miles)

It's true that most engine wear occurs during startup. Furthermore, diesels are generally easier to rebuild then gasoline engines.
