Having owned Hondas and Acuras before, I was use to the short, squatty but fat filters that were used on all the cars. This was in the early to mid 90's. When I bought my son's 04 civic, I noticed that Honda changed to the slightly taller but skinnier filters - it was on the motor from the factory, and it's what I got as a replacement at the dealer.
Went to do the oil change on the Pilot tonite, and hearing that all hondas take the new skinnier filter, I was ready to use one of the filters I bought for the civic. Low and behold, the factory filter on my '04 Pilot (built 7/04) was the low, squatty one I was used to on my older Hondas, not the new skinny type. So - what do I use? Can I use the new type, or should I try to find the old type to match what they put on my Pilot only 3 months ago? Online vendors show only 1 filter for all Hondas. I'm confused.... thanks - andy

You buy the filter that the dealer gives you, or the proper crossreferenced filter from any reputable brand and you don't worry!
No one on this board has any EVIDENCE that this is not a perfectly suitable solution. Now go find something worth worrying about.

Well, I'll be honest that I'm not worrying about this too much, but I am curious. I've heard again and again that Honda went to the narrower filter as a replacement for the older, wider one. And the new Civic (built in 4/04) had that filter and I've done 2 oil changes with the same filter.
But the pilot was built in 7/04, and it had the old-style filter on it, but I'm told to use the newer one as a replacement. Why are they still using a different one at the factory? Have others seen this? I can tell you that the new filter is taller, and will come real close to resting on the plastic splash cover what I replace it. I'm not worried - but I am curious......... andy

Quote:
2) Multiple OEM vendors 3) Unimportance of the issue
