throttle fully open mean you are step on it. I don't believe this is mentioned in idle learn. you may blow your engine is you do that at neutral.

throttle close means don't touch that gas pedal

Thumbs up I think i did it

OK,this is how i did it;i turned everyaccesory off...,then i disconected the negative from the battery and left it there for almost 15 min. then i reconnected the negative back and started the Pilot up and allowed it to idle till the fans kicked in then i shut it off...is this ok in your guys opinion or not .
Thank you all .

The idea is to get 5 minuets of idling time with everything off and the engine at normal opperating. So;

1 get it warm.
2 Shut it off.
3 Disconnect the battery.
4 Reconnect the battery.
5 start it and let it idle. (with no accesories on)
7 IF the fan comes on durring the 5 min, don't count the fan on time)
8, 9, and 10 shut it off and be happy.

Forgive me, someone will have to fill me in, but what does the fuel economy have to do with the learn idle procedure?

My first 3 or 4 tanks of fuel seem to have only averaged about 14 - 15 MPG, and that's taking it real easy (not much highway driving though). It may be entirely possible that the dealer did not complete the "learn idle" procedure.

Or am I mis reading the above post?

Thanks in advance.

Part of the trick that Honda uses to get such good gas mileage seems to have to do with the computer knowing how to idle the engine.

It seems that if this procedure is not done properly it can take a few tanks till the learning get to where it should be.

Hondas also seem to take up to 5000 miles to break in and will not get their expected gas mileage till then.

14 to 15 for a new Pilot around town is not terrible.

Thanks N_Jay, for helping explain that.

My experience is that typically, new vehicles take between 1500 - 5000 miles to begin achieving the best fuel economy numbers.

So I really wasn't too disappointed by the #'s I've gotten so far.

What was interesting though was that my wife drove to Dubuque and back (an Irish dance competition for my daughters) and it averaged like 20 MPG then, so that was nice.

The 3 other tanks have been like 13.8 - 14.5 MPG, but I guess cause that's her "socccer mom, stop and go, drop this here, pick this up here, and run all over the place" driving habits.... lol.

I am just jealous of the new Odyssey's EPA #s - 20/28. The "cylinder de-activation" feature must work well!

Default Odyssey

I saw an 05 Odyssey with the touring package at the dealership when we picked up our pilot. If my wife every gave the okay to pick up a minivan, that would be the way to go.

I don't think Honda missed a thing on that one.

Thumbs up Re: My trip to Banff/fuel economy

Hello everyone,so last weekend the wife & i went to the mountains, since we work fridays we didn't leave Edmonton till about 5 PM,stoped in Calgary for dinner then by 9 PM we got in Banff,in the mountains was dark and foggy but i was very impressed with the fog lights the way they lit up the sides of the road (looking out for animals, etc ),but here are the impresive results: mountain driving (got no clue what altitude...),the Pilot had then about 2000 Kilometres on the odometer,so to a full tank of gas (Shell Optimax Gold 91 octane) i managed to get 760 Km !....i think that's very impresive considering that the break in period is still on,that's 10.5 L/100 Km,i'm happy with that ,i'm sure that the idle learning procedure you guys helped me with had a lot to do with it.
Thank you to everyone.

P.S. To date i've got 3000 Km on my Pilot (i guess i drive a lot, well my BMW is in the body shop for full paint job (( hale damage...
)),once done i'll alternate between the two).

Hello there, sorry to bring this off topic a bit, but I'd like to ask a fellow Chicagoan about the dealerships in the area. My mother has finally decided to get a new car (first one since her VW bug in '68!) and I know nothing about the honda dealers in the area. We are from the SW side of Chicago (Beverly/Morgan park area) and she's pretty much sold on the Pilot. So, naturally being a good son, I have took it upon myself to do the research for her and I'm left with a good impression of this car (it was this or the Toyota Highlander) and now my biggest concern is going to a reputable dealer for price and service down the road. Any suggestions, comments? This is a big step for my mom and her spending this kind of money is a big deal for her. I just want to be sure that I am armed with the right information before we take the next step. Thanks very much!

Hi try this, if you go up the screen 4 or 5 posts up you will see a posting from N-Jay. There is a pm button under his post. You can send him a private message (what pm stands for). He's knowledgeable and I am sure he will help you out.
Good luck
