Default Honda OEM oil filter is made by ...FRAM !

Hi everybody, today i went to the dealer to have to engine cover and rad cover replaced because when i bought the Pilot the idiot that busted the car scratched them,anyways...while i was there i bought an Honda OEM oil filter and asked the parts guy who makes this...he turned it over and showed me...Honeywell name writen on it,i was like this is...and before i finished what i wanted to say he said ...yes Fram model S33252 .....i was no way,but it's true Fram makes this one and looks like it's the one with silicone backvalve.
I thought here on this forum we weren't gonna accept Fram but what are our choices,really....Amsoil .
Thank you

O.K. I'll bite.

What's wrong with Fram?

Dac, if you'd do a search for "oil AND filter", you'll find lengthy discussions about oil filters. I think there was a mention here and there about Honda OEM filters being made by FRAM.

Once you start reading you'll find out what others are using instead of the OEM filter.

I have been using Purolator Pure 1. Model number escapes me right now, but you should be able to search for it.

OK< time for a reality check.

Has anyone here had a first hand experience with a engine problem or filter failure of a FRAN filter used for its intended application?

I know, Reality is Sooooo boring!

In the over 500,000 miles I've driven since 1973, the closest thing I've come to an oil-related engine problem is busted oil cooler lines on a '96 Blazer, which was discovered and fixed before even a quart of oil leaked out.

I did blow a gasket in the grease fittings thread here about a year ago.

I have not had any filter failure by using FRAM and oil changes at every 3000 miles for the following cars that I have owned:

82 Honda Accord - 128k
89 Honda Civiv LX - 242k
94 Nissan Pathfinder - 194k
00 Acura 3.2TL - 52k and still going

That being said, the price difference between FRAM and Purolator Pure 1 is small enough that I am now using Purolator Pure1 on my Pilot and 3.2TL. I just went down to local Pepboys and bought a batch of 10 of them. That should keep me busy for a while.

Many folks on other boards that I frequent (mainly Toyota boards because I have a Tacoma PreRunner) totally agree with the notion the Fram is the Anti-Christ. I personally use Amsoil, Purolator PureOne or Napa Gold filters. If you need to read up on why Fram sucks, head on over to www.bobistheoilguy.com and take a look, you will be amazed.

I've heard that Fram filters are made with cheap cardboard filtering material and can do more damage than good and that the anti-drainback valve is faulty. Yeah, the filters are readily available everywhere, but why not go the extra few miles and get a quality filter. Afterall, you paid over $30K US for your rig, why not treat it right? You wouldn't treat your family like that would you?

If 0.01% of Fram filters caused problems we would be reading it on the front page.

I have been a LONG time user of NAPA Gold series but after my review of technology, I go to information from Advanced Auto Parts website -

Purolator PL14459
Pure One Oil Filter

Pricing
Our Price: $5.88

Availability
See availability in a store near you
Usually ships in 1 business day
Shipping weight: 0.7 lbs.

No regrets, use on Honda and our 97 Subaru Outback with the 2.5L boxer engine. Additionally, with the boxer design, I add Lucas oil additive too on every oil change, made a BIG difference on start-ups.

In the mid 90's, I worked at a Honda/Kawi dealership (motorcycles) for a few years (Santa Monica). At that time, there were quite a few incidents of Fram oil filters being blown off bikes during club races (Willow Springs, etal). All the racers I knew back then avoided Fram filters like the plague. (That was about the same time when Arco gas was a common denominator in a lot of bikes that were coming in for performance problems.) The only media someone might have heard or read about those problems would have been in one of the cycle magazines - most often it was by word of mouth. It wasn't mainstream enough to make major news.

I've never personally heard of problems with automotive Fram oil filters but I'm a little bummed to find out they are supplying Honda. I hope they've improved their quality.
