If you don't cut the plastic you won't be able to remove the filter. I guess you could use another filtering medium, but you would not have as much air passing through if you did causing an inefficient system and thus making it work harder to pull air through. Honda engineers made the filters like that for a reason.

What????? There's a Hepa filter available as a replacement cabin filter? Or is kingkaoppa refering to the standard cabin filter avilable from most auto parts stores and the dealer?

Thanks!
Larry.

I think he means the regular filter. I really doubt any of the major chains would carry a hepa cabin filter.

I believe the Honda filter is a "micron filter". But then so is a "Hepa filter".......

Since I had to remove the glove box to install the PIE X3 adapter last Sunday, I replaced the cabin filter at the same time. It took me about half an hour with the excellent instructions from this site and a rotary cutting tool. I got the Bosch filter from Murray's for $19.99. The original filter was really dirty. I plan to replace it every year.

Just what I needed! Thanks! I was afraid I'd have to remove the whole dash...

Double Amen.

Thank you Hondaman2 and all other contributers to this thread. Don't think I would have tackled this one on my own without the excellent instructions. In reality, not too bad except for that right side glove box screw which was a nuisance but certainly doable.

Just replace mine today at 29000 miles. Hardest parts were removing the glovebox with the stops in place and cutting the plastic brace out. I was going to use my Rotozip but uses a wire cutter instead. When I reinstalled the glovebox I removed one of the stops.

I also was going to clean my K&N air filter but it wasn't dirty. It looked like the day I installed it unlike the cabin filter which was pretty dirty.

First, thanks for the awesome instructions, Hondaman2. Took me an hour and saved me about $100 (next time, now that I am "experienced" should be less than half that). Filter was filthy. Second, what an odd way to place a filter that needs to be replaced every year. I couldn't believe I had to cut the dash frame to get at the filter and figured there must be another way, but nope. Weird but I guess it keeps the faint of heart without good instructions like these from trying it. Fred

I think it's just a function of how the dash had to be manufactured for installation into the vehicle. But what a pain that first time!

I think you are probably right jay but I am also guessing that Honda doesn't feel terribly motivated to make filters like this easy to replace since they can get $125 (my local dealer's charge) to replace it once a year.
