Default Torque for Oil Drain Plug

The book says 29lbs, When I changed the oil I noticed a little residue by the drain plug. I changed the oil and intalled a new crush washer, torqued to 29lbs. Not a lot of clearance under there for a torque wrench. Yesterday I noticed oil leaking from the plug. This morning I bought some rhino ramps ( Perfect clearance ) and torqued it again this time tighter around 34. Anyone else had this problem? The wife is driving it now I'll re check it when she gets back

Are you sure your torque wrench is accurate? I always have my torque wrench recalibrated every year at my work place, and they usually off by +/- 5 lbs-ft after a couple of usage.

Default My perspective

Although everything has a torque spec, it doesn't mean it's that critical. I've never used a torque wrench, or ever seen one used, to tighten a drain plug. I've never had one leak, even using the same washer over and over. The torque spec I usually use is "sock it down good and tight", without getting ridiculous, assuming I'll be the one who will have to remove it in a few months for the next oil change.

That torque speck went out a long time ago.

The current spec is "Just sock it down tight enough".

Seems aluminum parts did not like the "Good and Tight" spec.

I always have 500 ml bottles of water on hand. Here's a use for the empty's.

No need to clean a funnel, just toss with the empty oil containers. You'll want to wipe it dry before, of course.

Yeah. There's no need to use brute gorilla force cranking strength. Instead, I just place a 3 foot pole over the handle of my wrench and crank lightly.

Glen

ps - for those who didn't get it, that was a joke. Don't use a cheater bar to tighten an oil drain plug!
