Default 1st oil change I'm a dumb a@%

went to the dealer today since i was in the area, i bought my supplies and started the process of changing the oil. Honda filter, Honda oil and a savings of .50 over what they charge, but at least I know it will be done right.

Step 1- Turn on Pilot to let the oil warm up for a few minutes.

Step 2- Place wrench on oilpan bolt

My Dumb A@% step 3- Burn the hell out of my hand on the exhaust system!!!

Warning dont follow my example. At least I can serve as a bad example

Sorry to hear about your bad experience in changing oil. Did you remember changing the crush washer?

Unhappy 1st oil change.

jwbiere,

Sorry to hear your burn. You are brave. I paid for mine. I just had my oil change for the first time at 7680 miles at my dealer yesterday. Parts cost only $12 ($4.60 - filter, $0.20 - washer, $7.20 - oil 5W20) and $1.58 for waste disposal fee. What surprised me was the labor amount. It was whopping $77.98 which includes tire rotation, break inspection and steering system inspection. The grand total including tax was $92.49

At the same time I received the transmission safety recall and got the oil jet kit installed. I hadn't received a letter from Honda yet but dealer could verify that I needed it. So I saved one extra trip.

Do you think so? I suspected so too because it was so painful.

I can't think of anyone I know who changes their own oil, that has not gotten burned. I have had that happen when I had a vw bus, and added too much oil at a gas station. I drive it home, and thought I would take the plug out and let a little run out. So the plug drops in the oil pan, I use my finger to hold up the hot oil, yell like a little girl, fishing for the plug, and got it in. Saved a buck (it was a long time ago) and one heck of a blister on my middle finger. Try to explain that to your buddies.

I remember year's ago a friend telling me about his neighbor filling oil after an oil change only to find out he had left the drain plug out.

I chuckled....
Damned if I didn't do the same thing some time after hearing the story! I was 'lucky' though as I saw the oil running on the floor on my first quart.

Been thier done that, but on my wifes old Tuarus. You think the Pilot's drain plug and exhaust are close, heck that is far apart compared that POS. Ford had both exhaust manifolds going around the drain plug.

Anyway, just glad to hear there are still people that can change thier own oil, sometimes it seems that every will just pay the Jiffy Lube guy to do it and they never do it right.

It is recommended that you run the engine to get the oil adequately hot to suspend dirt, etc so that it is carried out of the engine with the oil. I know it gets a little dicey under there (I've been doing my own for the last 40-some-odd years) - but I feel a lot better about MY job than some shade-tree wannabe mechanic working at the local Juffy-Lube.

YMMV
