Post Oil analysis results with 3750 on Mobil 1 oil

The following is the oil analysis report I received a few days ago on our 2004 Pilot. This oil was from the very first oil change at approximately 3750 miles.

As stated in the analysis, the results are high compared to what we should eventually see, but resonable for a relatively new engine. The copper is high, but that appears to be common for this engine for a period of time. Obviously, there are no significant problems with our engine (air leaks causing increased silicon, fuel leaks, anitfreeze leaks, egr value problem increasing insolubles, etc.). I will likely change the oil again after 3750 miles to ensure the numbers are coming down, then change every 7500 mile there after with an oil analysis every now and then.

Please feel free to comment on the results. I expect to see much better results in the future as the Pilot's engine wears very well. Does anyone else have any reports they would like to share?

The Mobil 1 was in from ~3750 to 7564 miles, so it had a little over 3750 miles of use. The date it was put in was early January -- most of the winter.

gilberttribe - I have one concern about the test result of your oil analysis. The molybdenum part is to high of a concentration being washed away. Even if the engine is fairly new, there should not be a >10% deterioration of the molybdenum elements on the internal parts of the engine. Molybdenum is used by car manufacturer to strengthen/harden internal parts of the engine and to lessen the wear of the internal moving parts of the engine.

It is most likely also added to the factory fill, and used in some asembly lubrications products, so you may be seeing some concentration from that.

Most engine builders use Molybendum greese on the bearings and cams when assembling the engine. I suspect that is where the high numbers are coming from.

N_Jay and PNW-Pilot - Both of you maybe correct, but this is his second oil change already. If the third and fourth oil change doesn't change the concentration of the Molybdenum to a lower level then I'll be worried if I'm in his shoes.

by the way, how do you send for oil analysis and what's the cost on it?

I too would be concerned about the level of moly if there weren't already a considerable amount of moly in Mobil 1 0w20 to begin with. The following link is an analysis of virgin Mobil 1 0w20:

virgin oil analysis

As was pointed out, the factory fill has considerable moly in it as well as shown in the following report on an MDX:

used oil analysis

The moly is an anti-wear additive that creates a coating on the engine parts. "This coating effectively fills in the microscopic pores that cover the surface of all engine parts, making them moother. This feature is important in providing an effective seal on the combustion chamber. By filling in the craters and pores. Moly improves this seal allowing for more efficient combustion and engine performance." This quote came from Bob's site as well.
