Question Large vs. small oil filter-

Would you guys feel comfortable using both the small and large aftermarket oil filters for the Pilot?

Our 03s called for the larger, but I think the 04s call for the smaller one.

I am comfortable with almost any filter from any reputable aftermarket source or OEM that cross-references to any of the engines of the same series as our Pilot.

The small filter was discussed long before the '04s arrived, when someone went to get filters and the parts department had the smaller ones.

Even though the '03 Pilot might call to use the bigger oil filter, I don't think you can get that size in OEM filter anymore. Honda, AFAIK, has discontinued the use of making the larger sized one and are now only using the smaller/newer sized filter.

You might still be able to find the larger/older sized filter around, but they're supposed to be phased out.

Perhaps I should rephrase my question...

I know the larger OEM has been phased out. The question is, is it ok to use equivalent-sized filters, BOTH big and small from an aftermarket manufacturer?

I've been using the new smaller ones made by Filtech and never had any problems.

well I don't know if this will matter with our pilot at all, but in my old car with 202,000 miles, if I use a smaller OEM(yes, OEM) filter, it gives a clicking(hydraulic lifters) sound on start-up. Then, after I started using the bigger OEM filters, there was no clicking sound anymore. This OEM filter by the way have the backflow valve inside and with the bigger volume, it provides the initial oil during start-up, hence eliminating the clicking sound. I do not know if it's true, any word in our oil expert(colorider?)

Post Large vs. small oil filter- aftermaarket

I took a look on Purolator's website (http://www.pureoil.com) and got the specs on the "large" filter (PL14459) and their "small" filter (PL14610). Here's the differences in their parts:

PL14459
Height: 2.95"
OD: 3.15"
Threads: M20x1.5
Relief Valve: 12 - 15 PSI

PL14610
Height: 3.52"
OD: 2.69"
Threads: M20x1.5
Relief Valve: 14 - 18 PSI

If you do a search by make & model for the 2004 Pilot filter, they still list the PL14459 part
To me, the more significant difference between the filters is the different values for the relief valve pressures ...

With all due respect, you are not going to see any problems in the short term unless the smaller filter were completely inadequate. The problems you would see would be long term problems involving increased wear and increased insolubles buildup. I'm not arguing that the smaller filter will cause any problems, but if it did, it wouldn't be something you would casually notice.

I realize there would be a severe downside to using an extremely large filter, but generally, I think bigger is better when it comes to oil filters. A bigger filter will typically have a larger filter media area, which is better suited to larger drain intervals. In addition, a larger filter increases the oil capacity slightly. What advantage would there be to using a smaller filter except that it is easier to grasp and turn by hand? I agree with sblvro as well.

I plan to use the larger if not an oversized filter next oil change if I can find one that meets the relief valve pressure spec.

Does anyone have the proper spec for the relief valve pressure? The two Purolator PureOne filters (PL14459 & PL14610) have different pressure specs. It would be nice to know what the spec is for the OEM filter part (both large and small!)
