Default This should start some good arguments!

I pulled this off another forum - from this article.

Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it.

Topping up the crankcase is a critical component of extended oil change intervals, and frequent filter changes are most likely the key to extreme-length intervals. The cumulative effect of even minor top-ups, let alone a filter change, substantially increases the longevity of the oil.

Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources.

What say?

Dammit!!! Thanks a lot colorider. Not only do I have an infant that keeps us up nights, now I'm going to have to worry about my oil. I'm still going to do as I've always done and follow the prescribed maintenance schedule. I'm fanatical, anal, obsessed, whatever you want to call it, about maintaining my cars. Whatever the manual says, I adhere to it. Just the other day, my tech at the garage said that he wants to change the tranny fluid every other oil change. If he thinks its a good idea, then so be it.

I saw Ford's name in this article so I'll say that I'm slightly suspect as to the validity of the study. Just don't give a lot of creedence to what American manufacturers have to say.

i don't know if i believe that oil works better as it gets older...that sounds a little off kilter. oil breaks down with heat. however, i think oil refinement and filter technology is such that every 3K is probably overkill, unless you are on a severe driving schedule (nyc traffic or colorado rockies).

the pilot manual only calls for 7,500 on normal schedule. i'm going to go to 4K for changes, or 5K if i use mobile 1 synthetic.

I thought about the ford thing too. But noticed they used a Chevy Camaro. Not sure what to think about the study. I'm going to change 5K miles, just what i feel good about doing. My brother would change the oil whenever he could remember, had to be 10K+, his cars never lasted. Mine do.

That being said it was a very intereesting article, I no more about oil then i care to.

Hee Hee!!

I knew I could get some people going with this one!

Anyone that has followed some of my posts will know that I'm not a "believer" of synthetic oils for the AVERAGE Joe Driver like most of us are (contrary to what some people would LIKE to think of themselves).

As long as you use a good quality dino oil and change it (along with the filter) every 5K miles, you should never have an oil-related engine failure. Period. Save your money.

Just my .02

Looking at the article they recommend the shortest change interval 8,000 miles for an engine that uses no oil. It appears from the article that they are using the sludge and gum build up in the engine oil to plug up points of loss (Rings, guide sleeves). Of course I worked for Phillips (not in research) for 15 years so I would not believe a word they said. Had many dealings with Conoco over my career with Phillips. Bartlesville, Ok. which was Phillips Corporate Office and Ponca City, Ok. was a Conoco Corporate Office about 1 hour driving time apart before the merger. Conoco personnel always appear to be at best lost and confused. So, I have some reservations about any thing they have to say. Sum it up between the three Ford, Conoco and Phillips, this article is probably worth about as much as the value of the 8 x 11 paper it was typed on.

So oil is like Scotch, the older the better? Still, I'd rather drink Scotch.

Now, does colorider also get better with age?

Colorider, I have 5 gallons of slightly used motor oil that's yours for the shipping charges.... I'll still change mine every 5000 miles with synthetic, it's cheap insurance. JT

Used Motor Oil,

I think you need to make sure and mark it HAZMAT!

You missed my post apparently. I change mine every 5K too. I just don't waste my $$ on synthetics. Old fashioned? No. Cheap? Maybe a little. Frugal? Yes. That's what allows me to pretty much drive the vehicles I want. It all pays off in the end.

The paper is titled-

Antiwear Performance of Low Phosphorus Engine Oils on Tappet Inserts in Motored Sliding Valvetrain Test

So I wonder how much the site you pointed out paraphrased it. I'd like to read the whole article but SAE wants $12 for it. It was presented at a SAE technical conference last year, I'm sure it would have been shredded all to hell if it didn't sound relatively correct.

Probably some truth to it, just like a used air filter filters better than a new one.
That doesn't mean that benefit continues forever though

Of course he thinks it is a good idea......to fatten his wallet! And since Honda specs relatively expensive trans oil, instead of the much cheaper stuff almost every one else uses, your wallet will be lightened considerably
