Default Oil drain plug gasket???

Going to change my 2004's oil for the first time. Just realized it has a drain plug gasket. Before I remove the plug I want to buy a new gasket. What kind does it come with. Fiber...??? Metal gasket with the rubber liner on the inside...??? or what.
Any help would be appreciated.

I love this site. Lots of interesting Honda Pilot facts.

Yep, it's an aluminum crush washer. I buy a dozen at a time at the dealer. Runs a whole $1.40 or so. They love my big purchases...

Glad your dealer is sooo generous. I've been ordering my filters from HandA, just ordered a few more, and washers, we'll see if I get Filtech's or Fram's.

Depends on who I get at the dealer. One guy charges me 5.50 with the washer (No charge) and the yong punk charged me $24.xx once, I started to walk out and the manager saw me leaving in digust (and saying, no way in hell am I paying that!) promptly my bill was chopped in half. Haven't been back.

I just bought a six-pack of filters for $27.90 (plus $3.95 S+H, mine were part of a larger order) from the site sponser, www.hondacuraworld.com and it came with 6 crush washers.

They list the filters in the car care section, instead of the Honda Pilot section, so it took me a while to find them.

From those who do their own oil changes (and have done more than a few on the Pilot), is it really necessary to replace the washer each time? Just curious what the experience has been ...

It's simply just good practice as it is a "crush" washer to help reduce the risk of stripping the threads in the pan. In a pinch, turn it over and use it a second time - just be careful.

Cheap insurance IMHO.

I would recommend it. IMHO, better safe than sorry...

If any of you guys that change your own oil ever have problems with the aluminum crush washers leaking slightly, try copper washers.
I've always been a fan of copper washers, they're not as soft as aluminum, but they seal better.
I wouldn't go out of my way to find them (I have a supply of them), but they do work very good if you're noticing any leakage.

Ever looked at the Lucas switch closely, you can see it has 3 operating positions:

Whoa! Copper and aluminum can react if placed together. Probably not a good idea to use a copper washer on an aluminum oil pan.

Hey, maybe that's what keeps them from leaking

Seriously, I've been using them since 1974 on all my motorcycles (which have aluminum casings) and cars (all american with steel pans) and haven't had a problem.

It probably takes more than the 6 months they are on to have a reaction, or the oil film stops it.
