Default Can I use old oil filters

I've got a few Honda oil filers p/n 15400-PH1-014 that have been hanging around my garage. When I bought a new filter for my 2003 Pilot this morning, I mentioned that to the dealer parts guy - he said that I could probably use the old filters.

The gasket and threads seem to match. The old filter is significantly larger than the new one. He said that the new filter was used across the board and was smaller than the previous ones because of limited space on some of the models.

Does anyone know if I can use this filter or not?

What is the original application?

These were for either a 1990 Acura Integra or maybe a 1984 Honda Accord. I don't remember how long I've been looking at these collectors items.

What's the shelf life? I'd toss 'em and forget about 'em.

Aw, c'mon, you mean saving $28 isn't worth the risk?

I'll pitch them, but I do have to say that I like the larger size of the old ones better.

Looks like I will have to look into aftermarket filters - after this one - I did buy a new filter for this change.

Thanks, Jay.

By the way, how much grief do you get for being a Pilot expert who has defected? Do I see another Pilot in your future, or do you just like the company here better?

Only robrecht gouges me every now and then. This forum has great people, and more than just Pilot insights. I do know, however, that my usefulness is limited. After all, I can't go to the garage and take a picture of the so-and-so on my Pilot anymore. Toyota and its luxury equivalents, and Honda and the same, are the only brands I'll consider at this point.

Truth in advertising, I learned to drive during the '73 oil crisis in a '73 Toyota Corolla, which led to my bias toward Toyotas ever since. While my brother and I were spending the summer visiting the grandparents, our parents traded a '67 Chevy Belair and '69 Ford Maverick for a '73 Corolla and '73 Celica. The Celica developed a leak in the rear main seal, so my Dad traded it for a '74 model, put over 300,000 miles on it, and started buying POS Chevys again. He even admitted that his '04 Silverado developed a transmission problem as he was driving it off the lot after taking delivery, immediately drove it back, and was disappointed in how long the dealer took to make it right.

Thanks,

Just before I bought my Pilot, I was minutes away from buying a Silverado with a diesel engine and Allison transmission. I don't tow anything big, but I wanted the gas mileage. Then I thought - Sure, the engine and transmission will last forever, but what about the rest of this thing? I left the Chevy dealership, drove down the road to the Honda dealership and never looked back.
I've got to say, I miss a pickup, but I love my Pilot - I've even sold 2 of my friends on them.
