Default 10,000 Mile Service--How Much?

Many of us are coming up on, or have already passed, the 10,000 mile mark.

I just had the 10,000-mile service performed on my Pilot EX per Honda's recommended scheduled maintenance.

I paid $88.71, after a 15% discount coupon that the dealer had sent me in the mail was applied to the full price of $102.41.

Is this high, average, or (very doubtful) low compared with what other Piloteers have paid?

Honda recommended service intervals are every 3750 miles for severe driving, and 7500 for normal driving. I follow the severe schedule, and get a $30 oil change on a 3750 interval, and full dealer menu on a 7500 interval.

What did they actually do, as service should have been done at 7500, and again at 11,250 following the severe schedule?

I paid ~$90 for the 7500 service-- oil and filter change, tire rotation, and look at this and that. I paid ~$30 for an oil change at 11,250. Somewhat expensive, but I know the extended warranty will still be in effect, and I get a few freebie oil changes ans yearly state inspections along the way.

That maintenance light is just a nag/ldiot light. Follow the schedule by the odometer, not that $%^% light.

Maybe I was wrong putting that it....I meant the light would come on at 15K mile for maintenance. I had my Pilot serviced at 7.5 K and assume the next one would be at 15k. So why do a 10K service?

When I made the service appointment, I didn't have the handbook containing the maintenance schedules with me. So, I told the service advisor I needed whatever recommended service was most appropriate for the 10,000-plus miles I had on the Pilot. (My first and only service had taken place at about 5,500 miles.)

As you see below, they termed what I had done a "10,000 mile service."

so all they did was a oil change and tire rotation and looked ato other stuff and charged a whole lot of money....next time just ask for a oil change and tire rotaion and my guess is they will do that in app $40.

I think I have said this before, but maybe not.

Always find out what is included in a service and how much each part is.
Do not just ask for the x,000 mile service because you will not know what you are getting and often won't know what you are being charged for it.

Yes, an oil/filter change and tire rotation. And what about "and looked ato other stuff" [sic]? If a number of other items were indeed checked out (they appear on a separate list I didn't publish), wouldn't some additional charge be appropriate--that is, in addition to the oil change/tire rotation charge?

OK, I probably paid too much. And I know I screwed up in not asking for service as exactly specified in the published "Normal" or "Severe" mileage (or time) service intervals and exactly what that would cost. (If I had had my book handy when I called, I would have asked for the 11.25k Severe service.) But if it comes to me telling the service dept. to JUST do this or that, Period, I'd rather err on the side of having them check out too much rather than too little.

Remember that the service department is a separate profit center for every auto dealer. They have their numbers to meet each month and will make every attempt to have you pay for items which are easily checked by most drivers. You can make a conscious decision to pay a dealership $80/hour to check your water level or tire pressure but don't make the decision out of ignorance.

Never be an uninformed consumer especially when dealing with the automotive industry. RTFM prior to making any service appointment and get the price in advance. Shop around. In the bay area, the 15K service varied from $160 to $289 (dealerships with 45 miles of each other).

Remember, unless you ask specifically what work they are doing compairing prices this way has almost no meaning!

Amen! An example is the replacement of the VTM-4 rear differential for the 15K service. Some dealers don't know (maybe) that it should be changed and this will be reflected in their quote. Review with the dealers what is included. A rule of thumb is that if they don't say it's included than it ISN'T.
