Default Replacing the airfilter (not the cabin one)

I read through the manual and it looks very simple enough to do, even for someone like me. However, I also read somewhere else that checking out the timing belt was a very simple task but when I attempted it, there were a couple of "gotchas" I wish someone had told me about when taking off and on the cover. Is there anything I should be informed of when changing the air filter JICIMFU?

Also, can someone please tell me exactly what this part, circled in red, is and what its function is? And how tight is the steel band that keeps the part in red attached to the big tube supposed to be tightened? If it was too obvious, sorry. Thanks.

I personally haven't replaced the filter. Hopefully it is relatively easy. According to Honda, the part circled in red is noted as a "TUBE A, SIDE BRANCH". Maybe this link will help.

Good Luck!

The air filter is an easy replacement, but many of us X owners have found the screws/bolts are REALLY REALLY REALLY tight from the factory. There are 4 IIRC. They're also pretty far down there. I tried a 10" or 12" phillips screwdriver but couldn't get enough torque to loosen them. They have a bolt head, so I'd suggest a ratchet extension.

Oh, and a magnetic one at that -- you don't want to drop them

I think "TUBE A, SIDE BRANCH" is just a resonating chamber used to fine tune the harmonics of the intake pulse.

Hey TW, I wish I had read your post before I proceeded with the job. I encountered one of those "gotchas". I could not believe just how tight the screws were on, every single miserable one of them!! You're right, the darn screw driver wasn't making it budge at all, so I ended up using a ratchet extension. Anyway, it's replaced now and I feel cleaner

Wow, thanks, 01r1. I'm always amazed at guys like you who have such esoteric knowledge of a car. That's just great. Would you happen to know just how tight the steel band is supposed to be that wraps around it to keep it attached to the big tube? When I checked, it was kinda lose, so I tightended the bolt while I was using the ratchet to losen the screws on the air filter, but now, I'm wondering if it was on the lose side on purpose or by design. Thanks.

I would think it should be snug enough to be airtight. If it the purpose was to be loose, they would have designed some kind of slip-joint that did not allow tightening.

Just my $.02....

I just removed the 4 bolts attaching the top cover of the filter box using a long extension, ratchet and an 8mm socket to replaced the air filter.

John, I actually couldnt lift the top cover without removing the side air tube connected to the top cover. There is a spring around the air tube and i had to remove it to pull the top cover out. I couldnt replace the spring back as it was very difficult to pull the ends together. any suggestions will be appreciated. Is it safe to drive without that spring ??

John, do you know the answer to Yesgep's question? I am about to replace the air filter, and I would like to get a feel how difficult to do the job. Thanks.

Is it that part #8 in the parts diagram SteveLuman posted above? Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but have you thought of trying to roll the spring back into its place with a couple of blunt and flat objects place on opposite sides of its radius? Sort of stretching it and wiggling it with the two objects? Sorry, not the most articulate description.

You shouldn't need to separate the tube from the filter cover at all. Unscrew, lift carefully and push it aside, let it come to rest on something and replace. You do have to unlatch that B-23-10 part in the diagram above and also, there's a cable that clips into the part I circled in red below. Get the cable out from there also, which makes for the top cover moving easier. Hope this helps.
