Angry CAT Replacement

Just spoke to a shop, they want $750 all in to replace the cat on my 2005 EXL.

I think this is excessive.....

Thoughts?

It's excessive. I need to replace the cat on my S2000 and got a quote for about $900 at the dealership. Honda's OEM cats are crazy expensive.

Get an aftermarket one from Autozone and do the work yourself. Or at least use a shop that's not the dealerhship.

If you're getting a CEL code for Bank-1 inefficient catalyst, change out the old spark plugs to Denso TT platinum and both front and rear O2 sensors. This might fix your check engine issue. I just went through this exercise with my pilot. I also ordered an aftermarket Catalytic converter ($280) for the firewall side but I don't think it's needed anymore. PM me if you want to buy that Cat.

It is the same aftermarket brand Cat I installed in my Volvo 2 years ago. So far the Volvo still passes emission tests, which means OEM part is over rated/ but may offer better fit and finish. In case you didn't know a little industry open secret, there are only a few major manufacturers that make all car batteries, tires and exhausts for OEM and aftermarkets. In other words, whether you buy brand A or OEM brand they may be made by the same company.

When it comes to electronics and waterpump, Chinese made aftermarket parts have the worst quality control so avoid it.

I'm having an independent shop replace one of the cats and 3 O2 sensors. They are replacing the O2 sensors with with after-market ones, but the cat is from Honda. They say the non-Honda cats will likely keep generating codes.

I just got told today that I need four new sensors and 3 new cats; they wanted to charge me $2226 and that was what they told me a "Black Friday" special....all because I had bank 1 CAT code failures....has anyone else had this issue. BTW, I drove away from that place.

Driving away was a good move. Find a mechanic who can properly diagnose and replace only the defective part.
