I spent some time searching these forums before I started this thread and this is a great resource for pilot owners as I'm sure you know. I have a 2004 EX-L with 180,000 miles and have had no major problems with it. Over the past 10,000 miles or so I have noticed a little noise I think is coming from the valve train or top of the engine, rear bank of cylinders. Also, the idle is rough until the engine warms up (I use Techron fuel additive for the past 50k miles (every 5k) to help keep it clean). So, after reading through some threads and viewing the awesome DIY photos of recent valve adjustments, I plan on doing this myself. (I have adjusted valves plenty of times over the years and I am no stranger to auto mechanics, but this will be my first Honda). My EX-L is not generating any error codes at this time. Here are a couple of questions I have regarding this procedure:
Is there a need to replace the fuel injectors while I have the intake removed because of the high mileage? or is it a scenario of "If it's not broken, don't fix it?" If I do replace the fuel injectors, should I go with OEM honda or a different manufacturer? What I have replaced (DIY) on my EX-L: Timing Belt, Pulleys, water pump: 130k Struts: 150k Rear Shocks: 150k EGR Valve: 160k Front Stabilizer Links: 170k I perform regular maintenance on all fluids. Thanks in advance for any advice as I will continue to search this forum for answers! |

I've been working on Hondas for over 10 years now (not professionally) and I've never heard of an injector failing (just leaking). They are the most precision piece of equipment in the entire car (tolerances are down to 1 micron). If your truly worried about them, all you should really do is send your set off to be cleaned and tested. That is all they really ever need. This is one of the most highly recommended places I've found (and also the least expensive @ $15ea). Still you have to mail your injectors to GA and wait so it depends on weather or not you can put your vehicle out of service for the time being.

You will need a bunch of gaskets to do the valve adjustment though since you have to remove the intake manifold and maybe the throttle body if you don't want to pop off the coolant lines. PS: Rough idle at cold start can be normal. I've heard Honda likes to use missfires to help warm the engine faster. This was talked about on one of the Acura boards. I don't know how true this though. Last edited by 94eg!; 11-14-2011 at 05:53 PM. |
