I doubt my AWD was ever automatically engaged within the last 12 months. In this case, would it be a good idea to once a year to use the button on the dash to force AWD drive on for a few miles at low speed?

You can count on the fact that your VTM system will activate every time you drive. It turns on when you make turns, when you accelerate, and when any wheel slippage is detected. It is recommended, in the manual, that you not engage the VTM lock on dry/regular pavement in normal driving conditions.
