Default Tire Sizes

I'm not overly keen on the tires my Pilot came with so I am considering replacements. I like what I have read about the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV and will probably get a set of those.

I have some questions about tire sizes. Unlike somethings, in tires, size does matter!

discounttiredirect.com shows several sizes that will work on the Pilot. They list the original size, +0, +1, +2, and +4 sizes.

+0 doesn't seem to get you anything over the O.E. versions. Will +1 work with the Pilot rims or are new ones needed?

I expect +2 and +4 require new rims. Would they provide much better handling than the +1s?

My local warehouse club has the O.E. size at $125 installed and balanced.

Check out Tirerack.com for the specs on the tire(s) that you are considering. They provide much detail on all aspects of the tires, including what rim widths are required for various tire sizes.

I thought about sizing up when we buy Cross Terrains, but it looks like the 255 size that I'd like will require a wider rim.

Default Plus sizes

Each "+" is adding an inch to the wheel diameter.
All "+" sizes need new rims.
These type of tire changes on an SUV are more for looks and style than for function. (OK; start shooting)

I would stay as close to the factory size as practical unless you have a specific reason to change a parameter.

Larger wheels make for smaller sidewalls and reduces flex in cornering. Also increases ride harshness.

Larger width increases tire patch (to a point), increases flotation for soft surfaces, increases width of tred for loose surfaces.
Also decrerases contact PSI which adds to hydroplaning, and increases roaling resistance lowering MPG.

Larger total diameter raises ground clearance, increasases atach and departure angle. Also rasies gear ratio (less usable power), raises center of gravety (less stability).

Talk to the guys at Tire Rack, and have fun.

While we're on the subject of tires/rims does anyone know FOR SURE if the Xs larger 17 inch rims and tires would fit on the Pilot? I know the bolt pattern is suppose to be the same but question if the X rim would fit snug against the hub with appropriate clearances all around - steering gear, calipers, rotors, etc. plus wheel-well clearance. An Acura dealer (parts guy) told that they have determined that some Acura wheels with same bolt patterns are not interchangeable because of differences in the rim - said the only way to know was the acid test - try putting one on. But, I have a slight problem with that - no X. And, I'm afraid that if I just approach someone with an X and asked them if I could take a wheel off to try it on a different vehicle that person would probably think, at best, that I was working for Candid Camera!

So take your friends suggestion back to him and ask if they have any 'spare' X rims around their dealership to try on for size.

Where do you plan to buy the 'X' rims from? dealership? eBay? MDX.org? Tim/acuraworld?

I think that has more to do with early Acura's like Integras and such.

I would start with Tire Rack, and see if they recommend a different wheel from Pilot vs. MDX
If the same aftermarket rim fits, then I would be 99% sure the same factory rim would fit.
