Default What is the difference between high mileage oil vs regular?

In particular I'm talking about this mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30.

Typically I use 5w-20 or -30 (when I can't find the 20s in stock) but I'm starting to see more of these in my local stores. What's the difference between this and the normal synthetics?

I searched in this forum and I didn't find anything. Off a google search it says the difference is "additives" but nobody states what specifically. Also I find the question, "can I mix that with a normal synthetic?" I'm thinking yes but alot of people just say you shouldn't, without stating a reason.

And why did I bring up this topic? Beause if you look carefully those jugs sell for $23.50 a pop when a quart of mobil1 would easily cost $7+ (which is towards $40 for a 5 pack). Yes call me cheap but that's what I buy for my oil changes.

Like N_Jay said marketing. I recently did an oil change on mine and the 5qt M1 was definitely the way to go. Especially when our vehicles take 4.5qts with a filter change. Little extra left just in case.

$5 a gallon.

OK, I did look into this and supposedly they up the detergent package to fight gum and sludge more aggressively because older engines have more blow by and tend to have more gunk in oil passages than newer.

It might be a similar deal with some of these oils now appearing that claim to go after sludge. Haven't seen any independent testing to read if 1) it is a significantly different additive package or 2) whether different = beneficial.

I tend to think hkellogg and belundy is right on the money. I'm sure it does has additives to help with seals and sludge but I wonder if it's something I should even be wondering about.

Either way I'll stick to my good old normal mobil1 synthetics for now.

(I bought the jug, but can't find a pic )
