Default Dearler Says to Flush the Rear Diff

I called my Honda dealer about the moaning noise I have been hearing at times from my 2005 Honda Pilot. This moaning sound is heard when moving forward from a stop, but only while turning. I just changed the rear diff fluid at 64K (also changed at 30K and 17K) with Honda VTM-4 fluid). The dealer told me that sometimes the read diff needs to be "flushed" by changing out the fluid twice, with about 1K miles in between. He is sure this will clear up my moaning noise.

Does this make sense? Does anyone know what the full capacity of the rear diff is? I know we change out 5.5 pints / 2.79 quarts with a drain and fill, but is there more in the whole system like in a auto transmission?

Thanks!

Its a gravity drain so nothing gets held in except a thin layer inside.
Does your driving qualify you for severe schedule?
Also, don't mix up anyVTM4 hand pump with 90wt pumps.

Thanks for the info. I do use a hand pump dedicated to VTM-4. I would say we rarely fall into the severe driving category. We do very little city driving and few trips under 10 minutes or 5 miles (we live 7 miles from anywhere). I tow my fishing boat (1800 lbs) once a year on a 700 mile trip. It does get cold here in WI, but we live out in the country, vehicle is garaged and most trips are 10-15 minutes or more.

Wow, an excellent post. I did start to notice this problem after I launched my boat back in mid June. I did change the VTM-4 fluid a week after I got home, but only once. It did look a little pink if I remember correctly. I will change it again and do the 10 figure 8s and see what happens.

Now my other dilemma - I am going fishing again over Labor Day weekend. Should I change it now or wait till I get back in case I get more water in the system? I think I better change it out and not pull in the water as far as I normally do. The water was fairly choppy when I launched it, so water could have splashed up and over the vent tube.

Thanks again!

Good job Harley. Change the fluid before you go, and take a look at the vent to see if its possible to extend the breather up higher
