Well at 51k miles I found one of my rear shocks leaking so off to the store to get a new pair. I must say I was shocked (no pun intended) of how easy it was to replace them. The hardest part was jacking the truck up. A 17m socket and ratchet and they were done. Well I had to pop to rear tires off as well.

I'm thinking of doing the fronts as I suspect they're weak enough after 96k to be a participant in the over 70 vibration saga we Pilot owners suffer from.

Rocky, when was the last time you had your tires rebalanced? I'd find an America's Tire Center (or Discount Tires, depending where you live) and have them do a re-balance on their Road Force balancing machine. Cured my problem after I got new tires from Just Tires. Went to 2 different Just Tires places and they still couldn't get it right until I did some research online and went to an ATC and that did the trick the 1st time.

Only if they need it. I replaced the rears because one was leaking. The front struts were not leaking. Unless you have $ to burn I wouldn't replace all 4 at the same time. I am eagerly looking forward to getting rid of the goodyear tires that I still have.
(rocky) I would hope that the struts last longer than 100k I would expect that they should last to at least 120k. I have seen them last up to 180k. (This wasn't on a pilot.) |

You should replace the shocks or struts when the car starts bouncing and the shocks have stopped damping the action of the springs. Could happen at 25k miles, could happen at 200k miles. Shocks aren't a scheduled maintenance item. They just need to be replaced whenever they wear out.
There doesn't seem to be any accurate predictor of shock absorber longevity. (not that I've seen anyway) Frequent motoring down bumpy roads, at high speeds, across potholes, or with heavy loads will shorten their lifespan, but how much is anybody's guess. It's hard to measure how much stress the shocks experience, but when the car starts bouncing after bumps, diving when you hit the brakes, jumping up when you accelerate, or when fluid starts leaking out of them, they need to be replaced no matter what the mileage is. |
