Default how much to replace rear brake pads

Last time my Pilot 2003 was in the dealership the service man told me the rear brake pads were thin like 2mm - he gave me a quote but I decided to shop around first -
Can anyone tell me how much usually a brake job (replacing brake pads) cost? FYI, I am living in Chicago Suburb, living cost here gas price is about $2.90 now days.

Thanks.

You'll ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers. Have you tried calling various shops in your area to find out?

Do ther rotors need turned or replaced? If not you are looking at about $50 in parts and less than 1 hour labor. So $150 to pop in new pads is fair. IMO

As said 10 different answers...

But where do you live that you would pay $100 an hour other then a dealership?

Anyway $50 for the pads and an hour seems right.

Although if you had even the slighest bit of mechanical skill then you can tackle this job yourself. All you need is a c-clamp, some anti-seize, sockets and your pads. Just one advice whether you get it done in the shop or not don't buy cheap pads.

I'll second that. I just replaced the pads, front and rear, on my Pilot. The pads cost me a little over $100 (OEM Honda pads). The only tools I needed were a socket set and a C-clamp. The anti-seize goo was included with the pads. From start to finish, the job took me under two hours, and I was moving pretty slow because I was on blacktop in direct sunlight the whole time.

Just my 2 cents. I know very little about automobile maintenance and changed all four of my pads for less than $120 with no problems. For the front and back, my local dealer was going to charge me close to $500. The toughest part is carefully jacking. IMHO, Honda has put a lousy jack point close to the rear end of the vehicle.

What don't you like about the rear jack point? Just shove a floor jack under it and pump just like the front.

It's about a 1/4 piece of steel. My vehicle tottered enough to scare the sheet out of me until I got stands under each pinch weld. Once on the stands I was good to go. Know anything about changing plugs? That's my net endevour.

Get that special socket with the inside rubber-grip, some anti-seize lub, a 3/8" extension (long), and some patience. Apparently 1-2 are hard to reach.
