Default 2005 Pilot Transmission Filter

My wife's 2005 Pilot is due for its tranmission fluid change, again, it has 61k on it. What Im trying to find out is when I should change the filter that is in the transmission. Everywhere I have looked for an answer, I get "it doesnt have a filter" or "we never change that filter", the last was from a Honda Tech . If you look at the parts diagram it does show a filter, its number 7 on the parts list.

Has anybody replaced this filter? I would think that it was there for a reason, not just put it there and forget it. Is it a PITA to replace, for those that have replaced it? From looking at some of the pictures of the magnetic drain plugs, during my search, I would think this filter has to catch a bunch of crap floating around the tranny.

Thanks for the help,
Gary

Gary,
That filter is not in the bottom pan where the fluid lives. There is only a drain plug at the bottom of the case that you take out to drain the old fluid. Also, make sure you get 4 qts[ not 3 like the dealer gave me] it'll take 3.5 qts. That "filter" you mentioned, is kind of like a paper cartrige like you might see on some gasoline engines. I'm not sure how accessible it is..... maybe that's why i haven't heard of anyone changing it ? anyone ?
I know when someone rebuilds one of these transmissions, they change that "filter". hope that helps

Thanks for your reply. I just want to make this thing last for a while. I know some of the Honda automatic transmissions, in Pilots and other models, have had some issues, I just dont want to have something fail because of not changing it. From what it looks like, to me, is fluid flows through it because there is a line coming out of the housing that the filter sits. As for difficulty to change it, it doesnt look to hard, but I have said these famous words before and had it bite me in the @ss. I guess Im over protective of my cars because I dont have the kind of money for most major repairs. I would rather spend a little now than a lot later. Plus this is the vehicle my wife hauls the kids around and I dont want them stranded somewhere. I know Hondas are probably the most reliable cars out there, Ive been driving and racing them for more than 20 years.

Maybe I'll wait one more interval and change it then, I dont know. Maybe there is more input.

Thanks,
Gary

I may take a shot at that filter some day. If I was the original owner and knew that it was always pretty clean I probably would not worry about it. But I bought mine used at 74k and my first drain and fills looked more like motor oil than tranny fluid.

Gary,

This is an easy DIY job and costs less than $20. It was already posted, but I will post the link again for the DIY I created on my own 2005 Pilot.

Just changing it would also give you a better feeling after you take apart the old filter and see how clean (hopefully) it is.

Well I got around to changing the transmission fluid and decided to hold off on the filter untill the next fluid change. I definitely will change it next time, I did see some black metallic junk on the magnet, but no distinguishable metal pieces on there, so that was good. Thanks everybody for the help. Now its off to replace the synchros and third gear shift fork in the Civic, for this season

Thanks again for the help.
