Arrow Re: Rear Brakes

I have an 07 Pilot and I just had the rear brakes replaced at 42K. Honda stated the fronts had 4mm left on them and backs only 2mm. I live in New England and I make frequent drives up to the mountains, but otherwise my wife drives 8 miles to and from work each day. I thought I'd get a little more life out of the pads

I ended up paying $240 (regularly $289) for the rears. Boch honda had a service coupon for the fronts that they accepted for the rears.

Brake wear varies so dramatically that it is hard to predict - almost anything can be considered normal. While fronts usually wear faster, this is not the case universally at all, so it is not that unusual to wear rears faster.

Dealers are generally EXTREMELY conservative in recommending brake jobs, both to generate service business and because they don't know if the owner is going to monitor the situation or ignore it until they come in again in 8K or 10K miles with backing plates grinding on the rotors. If you're willing to monitor the wear situation yourself, you can usually add on 10K miles or so of brake life.

Dealers also routinely recommend rotor replacement at every change and if the rotor is not badly scored and is within spec, you can just change pads.

I have 173K miles already and still on my original rotors. I do replace the pads regularly when it is close to being worn.
