Hello,
Found this thread, seemed the closest to my case but may not quite fit: I'm having this done on my car...is it a good price? I've used M1 5W-20 since new on an 07 that now has 74K mi. After changing the oil I noticed what appears to be valve clatter. Motor idles fine, runs great, no problems driving. The clatter isn't audible when driving or when inside the car with the hood closed; it's apparently worst in the morning when the motor is started and someone stands in front of the car. I've not notived it before, but then again I don't drive this car. I've also not been able to hear other Pilots. My guesses are valves or maybe a belt tensioner, either external or for the timing belt. However, the noise seems very "top end" in nature, in that it seems to come uniformly from the rocker covers rather than be concentrated on the front of the motor... Anyone else? Common? My understanding is that clatter from the valves will result as valves "loosen" and that this does not affect reliability - is that correct? |

It could be a combo of valve clatter and injector noise, both of which are louder on cold starts.
The owner's manual implies that if the valve noise isn't distracting (one assumes with the hood closed), then it's fine. I recall they want you to check valve clearance at 105k or something as part of that service milestone. However, many shrug that off as well unless the valve clatter is annoying, or driveability or bad idle issues would cause you to have it looked into. Compare it to another Pilot of similar mileage.
