Default Hood heat shield

I've noticed my 2004 Pilot is getting a few small areas of paint failure (looks like little white spiderweb under the clearcoat) on the hood.

The hood in this car gets very hot from the engine, and I notice there is no heat shield inside the hood like there is on my BMW. Perhaps just a cost saving thing from Honda? Is there an aftermarket solution to add one? May not be worth it unless its cheap since I could always get the hood resprayed if the paint failure gets too bad, and that probably only costs a couple hundred bucks although I'm not certain of that

I have the same problem on my 2004 pilot, and have come to the same conclusion, especially after seeing newer models at the dealership all have heat shields. At this point, I'll wait and have it resprayed, but after that I'd like to prevent it from happening again if I could...

Dynamat makes a product called HoodLiner. Most online discount retailers sell it for $40 (12 sq ft). For more info check here:

The main feature of this product is that heat is reflected back into the engine compartment. I don't know what the impact to the engine and other various components will be but I assume there's enough airflow when the car is moving to dissipate heat.

I have had this product under my hood for about 3 years with no problems.
I installed for paint protection and noise reduction. Don't know if it helped with the paint protection, but my paint so far is perfect.

Yeah it kinda depends how quickly the failure spreads. I may not have noticed it for awhile as I only recently took the time to give my car a nice detail job. I'll take a look at this heat shield thing. Interesting that the newer ones have the shields...

How bad is your paint failure and how quickly has it been progressing? Mine is a spot about the size of a dime or nickel, and another spot about the size of a pencil eraser an inch beside it

I just bought a 2010 tour/navi/res and it does not have any shielding under the hood that I can see.

I don't think the Pilot comes with the sound deadening layer - the MDX does. There have not been many (or any that I can remember) complaints of hood paint spidering/blistering on this forum, so I don't really think underhood heat is an issue. There are many many cars that don't have the insulation. It is more likely something introduced from the environment.

Here's a pic of a 2009:

That's good to hear. Did you trim the hoodliner in sections or just one piece across?

When I first saw it, it was only a few 'stars'. Now it seems to have spread, can see it on the front right 1/4 of my hood. Most people probably won't notice it, but I sure do.
One of the admins on a detailing forum has the same model as me and has the same issue. Said it could be due to a number of issues, but likely a result of heat (both of our Pilots are black) but unsure whether it is a result of the sun or the engine. Since my damage is localized in one area, I'm guessing it's the engine, but no real proof, just my suspicion...

My dealer didn't have any pilots on display when I looked, but all other vehicles had a black shield under the hood. Assumed it was across all models....

They have one in liquid form that can spray or paint on as the hood liner protection ...

Yeah go figure, mine is Black too! Could perhaps be the black paint. Until now I haven't been good about keeping wax or sealant on there. However this is definitely UNDER the clearcoat - its not something from the "environment" that is etching the clearcoat.
