Default DIY: Timing Belt

Has anyone does this job themselves? I have an '04 Pilot and an '03 Civic that will be due a timing belt change in the next couple of months. I am a pretty decent mechanic and have tackled timing setups before on larger vehicles but all have been forward facing engines.

Is this worth my time or is a cramped side facing engine a real pain to work with?

Default With you on the Timing Belt DYI

Chuzie,

The wifes' 06 just turned 60,000. I am also looking for info. Over the years I have done enough to feel good about doing the job. Are any special tools required, seals and gaskets required. It nice to have it all together at the start of the job. I'll keep you posted on any intel I find.

Probably the best tool to have for doing a timing belt, is the crankshaft pulley holder.

It looks like a big six sided nut with a tab so that you can attach a 1/2" breaker bar to it.

You will NEED this if you want to have any chance to loosen up the pulley bolt.

I did a 03 MDX last year and I didn't have one, but I got one now for my wifes 01 and for a few close friends that have Hondas.

Did I mention that the pulley bolt is TOUGH to get loose.

You will need at least TWO breaker bars (with cheaters) to break them loose.

Have fun.

Thanks for the tip. I would have lost a lot of time trying to remove it otherwise. Did you purchase the tool from Honda or a tool retailer? Also, did you use the factory service manual or a Chilton/ Haynes type to guide you?

There's a pretty good DIY on this very forum. BTW, unless things are different on the early Pilots, the recommended replacement interval is 105K.

Default crank mounted pully

Buzzstrike,
Will it come off with an impact gun. Maybe not enough room. The pully lock suqeezes the pully and locks it to the block somehow.

I have not changed the timing belt on my Pilot, but I have done several other Hondas in my life (Accord, Integra, Odyssey). The were all similar timing belt changes, and it appears that Honda has not changed the way they build engines on the Pilot. I never had the tool described here, but I can assure you I would have been glad to have it. Like others have mentioned, the bolt on the harmonic balancer is TIGHT. If you can stabilize the pulley, you are half way there. Make sure you are using quality 1/2" drive sockets and you have a breaker bar and a cheater. Air impact wrenches are no help.

Any techniques for stabilizing the crank w/ out the tool? A link to the DIY would be great since I can't seem to find it myself.

Ive tried all types of searches for the DIY Timing belt change with no luck. Did it get purged or deleted?

It looks like posts prior to June 2009 have been purged or lost. The list on a search does not go earlier than June 09. I remember seeing it too, but it was an earlier post.

The old posts look like they're still around, but I couldn't find a timing belt or water pump DIY. GL.
