There is only one model of scangauge. It connects into the OBDII port which should be right above the driver's right knee under the dash. If your vehicles are 1996 and younger then the SGII will be able to read the codes. However, if your cars are pre-1996 then they are the OBDI standard and the SGII will not be able to be used on those vehicles.

The SGII is much more than just a scan tool. Check out scangauge.com for all it functions, it's more than worth the money.

Take a look at

http://obddiagnostics.com/index.html

I bought one two years ago (the kit for $45) and it works quite well, is loaded with features. Of course, you need a laptop (an old Pentium I or better) computer with a serial port.

Does not read transmission codes (not many do).

Read the FAQ page for features and to buy the correct unit.

Also, many AutoZones will read codes for free.

Thank you guys, although i will love to have one which can read any vehicle from 1996 till date.

Does it mean if i get to that obd website, i would be able to get the particular one that can work for cars from 1996 till date?

Response pls.

The known OBDII protocols are:

* J1850 PWM
* J1850 VPW
* ISO9141
* ISO14230 (also known as Keyword Protocol 2000)
* CAN (ISO15765/SAEJ2480)

The CAN protocol is mostly found in 2004 and later European and some Chrysler cars, and would use the BR-CAN.

Most everything else, including Japanese and Korean makes would use the BR-3.

To be sure, determine what your vehicles use (call the dealer or a repair shop) and match the obd box to it.

The obddiagnostics.com web site is worth a read.

FYI the 2005+ Toyota Tacoma uses the CAN protocol as well.
