Unhappy shocks or struts ?

Hello friends,

I've got a 2003 EXL with 60k miles. Recently, I feel that the rear end is lower than usual, and the ride is getting bumpier. Also the front end feels like it is floating, especially on incline roads. Do hear some squeaks from the rear end. Do you think my suspension needs replacing ? If yes, does the pilot have struts or shock absorbers ? And do I need to take it to a Honda dealer or can I take it to a Midas shop ? Any suggestions, what brand struts or shocks are best for the Pilot ?

Thanks,
Vik.

Assuming you've got no load in the rear, then I'd say yes its time for new shocks.

Few aftermarket alternatives. Monroe is one I've seen others use. Struts at the front, shocks at the rear.

Springs also loose height over time as they sag. Very rarely replaced unless a failure occurs.

The design of the front struts and rear shocks are nothing special. Your average mechanic can replace it. I don't trust Midas shops though- I used to sell parts to them, and they never knew a brake job that didn't require new calipers and rotors as well. Loved them because I was paid on commission, but I'd never take my car there.

Default Replace

Try to replace rear shock first. Check for leaks - shock is dirty, covered with grease black slime. I just got mine replaced at Mavis and after some specials and discount I paid a little over $100 (parts and labor). Big difference!

i replaced the struts and shocks on our '03 last year at 75k miles. i bought KYB GR2s from past experience with this manufacturer. i like them. cool after effect is they are painted silver and match my pilot's paint.

i did the install myself. i needed an extra pair of hands, but it wasn't so bad.

The KYB GR2 seems to be easy to push in. it does come out, but slow. it this OK or do I need another set? should they be stiff enough so I can't lean on them and get it to push in?

no, you should be able to push them in, but it should offer resistance.

keep in mind they are 'dampers', so their jobs is to stabilize the springs to restrain the energy of the cars motion on the springs. weh nthey cannot do this, the springs overpower the struts and shocks and you get the "float" or the pogo effect.
