Default Timing belt change.

I am approaching the 100k point on my 2004 Pilot. I was wondering what the going price is for a timing belt change. My dealer ship was quoting me around $990, plus a 20% coupon = final price around $792.00. I do all the recommended maintenance because I want to get the most out of my Pilot as I don't see myself buying a new vehicle for quite some time. Thoughts on the price?

Thanks!

I'm having the same thing done but my dealer here in Western NC is only charging in the $550 range.

Just to make sure you're comparing apples-to-apples, do your prices include:

Timing belt
Accessory drive belts
Water pump
Various seals
Labor

Chip makes a good comment - you can't shop for price on these without knowing exactly what the list of things that will be done and you definitely want to do the water pump while you're in there. And there's always the question of whether the price is OTD and includes all the tax and misc shop and environmental fees.

Assuming the water pump, accessory belts, and coolant are replaced, $800 isn't the best but it is reasonable for a official Honda dealer's service department. Unless you have a good independent mechanic who regularly works on Hondas, I think this is a job that is best entrusted to a dealer since they probably do several every month and would likely use one of their senior techs on a job like this. So if you've had good luck with this dealer's service department, I'd go with them.

Actually, my quote was for timing belt and labor so it wasn't apples to apples.

Does it make sense that when getting the timing belt, water pump, etc changed you also have them install new spark plugs? The mileage recommendation is the same (or close) if I recall.

It might make sense from a timing standpoint, but when I had my timing belt done, they wanted an extra $250 to change the plugs.

I said, "No thanks, I'll do it myself".

When you changed your plugs, did you use a torque wrench to tighten them down? I have heard some say you must do that now. I was from the hand-tighten and 1/4 turn school.
