While there has been considerable discussion about the use of Fumoto valves for oil changes on Pilots, I have not seen any discussion about their use for transmission fluid.
Fumoto makes a valve and adapter (F104) which appears to be the same size as the Pilot ATF drain bolt (18x1.5mm). Has anyone tried this for draining ATF Pilot ? If so, was one or more adapter required? I have installed Fumoto valves for both oil and transmission fluid on my Suby Forester and have found this system works extremely well. I would like to do the same on my 2005 Pilot, if possible. -- Dan |

Your post got me thinking about using one on the differential. Sure would make changing the VTM4 fluid a breeze.

Just another suggestion. You can buy a vacuum fluid pump for about $50 and use it to empty the transmission's sump via the dipstick tube. You wont be able to clean off the drain plug magnet using this approach, but it will make drain/fills an easy task with virtually no mess. Perhaps you can clean the drain plug magnet after the sump has been drained and get the best of both?

FWIW, I personally would not use the fumoto valve on the transmission. Without the magnet, whatever filings and metallic contamination wind up in the fluid could wind up in the filter, potentially clogging it up earlier than would happen otherwise, or could just be pumped around for a while before they get filtered. I don't know the fluid path inside the transmission, but if it gets circulated for a while before it gets filtered, there's potential for extra wear and tear and possible premature failure of various components. Not worth the risk if you want my opinion. Removing the magnetic plug and wiping it off just isn't that difficult compared to the potential for problems from extra metal filings being pumped around in the unit. Then again, maybe the extra sedimentary stuff would just settle into the valve and it would be fine, but it still seems more prudent to let the engineered system do its job as designed.
