I do still have the transfer case to replace the fluid in.

We don't have a transfer case.

Unless your talking front wheel drive only you have a transfer assemble according to the 2011 OM. Fluid=SAE 90 or SAE 80w-90 hypoid gear oil, API service classified GL4 or GL5 only. See pg. 480

Not on '03s. Transfer case (or whatever the proper term is) fluid change didn't come into effect until '06 or so.

New to working on these, I think I got ahead of myself from some of the pictures I have seen on here. Not sure what it is called on these vehicles then? takes 75-90? Or does this not exist on the 2003 model? I will have to go back over some of the threads I saved again.

Does NOT exist on 2003-2005 models, we have VTM-4 fluid exclusively. The transfer case (75-90 SAE gear oil) folks are refering too began with 2006 model.

Just to stay clear...

VTM-4 is for the rear 'differential' style case. NOT, repeat NOT for the tranny.

The first gen Pilots, I'm thinking 03-05, call for the Honda specific transmission fluid, only found at the DEALERS... ATF-Z1.

As ptsmh73 notes, a transfer case, with it's own, independent oil supply, came along with the 06' model.

My wife's got 179K+ on her 2003 Pilot. Not too shabby. I have her beat with my '96 Civic though at 281K+

Psshhhh.... A 96 Civic could go for another 281 no problem. There's even a guy with a 91 Accord that just passed 1-million miles (Honda even gave him a brand new Accord too). I'm not quite so confident with these newer "American" Hondas.

For this you just need a valve-cover gasket set ($25). Just be aware you need to kinda pop the intake manifold off to get the valve-covers out.

Just purchased a 2005 Pilot with 109,000 and planning on having the 105K maintenance done. The water pump is the big ticket item on this maintenance. Does it really need to be replaced?

You certainly don't have to, but since the labor involved in getting to it is significant and expensive (basically all the labor of doing a full timing belt change) compared to the price of the water pump, many folk decide to change it out while they're in there. Many don't, it's rather up to you and your level of risk aversion.

Dermot.

2003 Pilot just hit 111,000 mile.

-Just replaced the timing belt, water pump, engine mount, brake job and CV boot. Valves and spark plugs still need to be done.

Default 118,000 miles

Howdy. Just joined the forum in a search for answers on the front vibration noise issue. I LOVE my Pilot... absolutely no issues, other than that pesky vibration noise at around 45 mph when the transmission load is kind of "neutral". I have an '04 and it has been doing it intermittently for a year or more now. Doesn't really get worse... just pesky... and makes me think there is something deteriorating somewhere. But... apparently, there is nothing really wrong, according to the posts I've read.

Mine is just like NEW still, and I plan on running it for many years to come! One of the best cars I have ever owned... rivaled only possibly by the '85 Honda Accord that I had. It was flawless for as long as I owned it.

Search the transmission threads.

You have the classic signs of a failing Torque Converter clutch.

I would immediately (or sooner) replace the 4th gear pressure switch (and maybe the 3rd, while you are at it) and change the fluid.

Now is the time to decide if you are going to sell it or keep it till the trans goes.
