Default what brand of brake pads did you buy?

I need to have all 4 pads replaced. I was at the dealer today to buy them but was really pissed off by their sales gimmick. Long story short, my wife bought a discount card from them for $100 4 years ago when we got the car. Supposedly it gives us a 10% discount for things we buy from them. But they said the brake pads price they quoted ($64 for front and $60 for rear) was discounted already so we couldn't use the card.

Anyway, i am going to just buy aftermarket pads. What are the good ones out there?

I'm very partial to PBR's Deluxe line of organic brake pads. I use them in all my cars. They're long wearing, better than OEM in some cases.

Bendix OEM's from Auto Zone, costs: 98.00 for front and rear.

I'm enjoying my Morse ceramics from Autozone, but they're on my Nissan 240SX. I'll probably give the Morse's a shot on my Pilot when the time comes, I'm only at 48k now, original brakes.

Those prices aren't too bad for OEM. Most online Honda parts places will be around $100 for front and rear pads. I went with Akebono ProACT ceramic pads. They're priced similar to OEM, create less dust and come with the appropriate shims and lube. Also don't forget about the brake fluid - needs to be replaced every 3 years independent of mileage (per your OM).

I knew the price wasn't bad. I just didn't like the fact that they told me I couldn't use the discount card for which we paid $100 upfront... I'd rather bring my business elsewhere.

btw, in case you are wondering which dealer it is. It's Madison Honda in NJ.

Strauss Discount Auto carries Bendix too too. $80 for front and rear. Are they good?

I replaced mine with Honda OEM pads. I paid about $100 for both front and rear, I bought them on eBay from a dealer. My originals lasted over 80K miles! I expect close to the same on the set I recently installed. I machined the rotors and flushed the brake fluid at the same time. I DIY'ed it so it didn't cost me much at all. I would try another dealer or order online. Bendix is a good brand, along with Akebono (the OEM pads are made by Akebono). Good luck.

I'm a believer that unless you have some special requirements with respect to braking (racing, rotor wear, etc.), that its best to go OEM. Some of the aftermarket brake parts out there are very poor quality.

I agree with the OEM sentiment.

Agreed, with reservations.

I never liked Bendix or Raybestos metallics. I've never had them last long enough, and they've always been high dusting.

I've been buying PBR for all my cars as they've needed brakes (even my '73 VW got them, as the fronts use the same pad as an early-90's Volvo uses in the rears). The PBR Deluxe pads have been low dusting, good performing, and long wearing.

On my '03 Passat, the OE rear pads dusted immensely, and wore out at 40k- which is typical for the OE rear pads for some strange reason.

I replaced with PBR, and 60k later they still have a but of life left in them.

That said, the Honda OE pads seem to be very good. They work fine, they are very low dusting, and from the looks of it, long wearing as well. Specifically on the Honda Pilot, I would go OE or PBR when the time comes, because I know the characteristics of both pad sets. I would stay away from the Bendix or Raybestos semi-metallic pads because I know their characteristics as well, and I don't like them. I also don't like the PBR Metal Masters, owing to the extreme dusting they put out as well.

Just replaced my pads and turned the rotors after just 45K miles. Dealer wanted $700 to do them. Took my Pilot to my local tire dealer... $270.00. To cold out to do the pads myself.

i use hawk hps pads front and rear $115

OE brembo rotors $120/pr on the front, OE brembo rears were about $130.

valvoline synthetic brake fluid flush = $20? and some time, no worries.

OEM pads are fine for the average joe.

FYI, all brake fluid is synthetic. It's an amusing bit of marketing on Valvoline's part. It's still a good fluid, don't get me wrong, as I use it myself.
