Default extended warrenty

Hello Everyone,

My 2005 pilot is coming up on the warrenty expiration and I am considering purchasing an extended warranty from my honda dealer. The warranty will cover the vehicle to 100,000 miles with a $100.00 deductable. The cost is 1599.00 and they allow the premium to be paid over 12 months with no interest through honda.

My vehicle has 28000 miles on it and has performed well up to now. I have maintanance done regularly and do as much as I can. Have to say I am looking forward to replacing the pollen filter soon. What a mess.

Anyway does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not this is something to do. I assume the warrenty extension is good insurance but since the car seems to work good I don`t know.

Sometimes I think because of the limited mileage I put on the vehicle that a 100,000 warrenty would carry me to about 10 years.

thanks for the advice.

$1599 seems high to me. I'd check with Tim at HondAcuraworld or Curry Honda for their pricing before deciding what to do.

That price might be correct since you have passed the 6000 mile mark for the cheaper Honda Warratny.

I want to say the one I got through one of the sponsers here at HondaPilot dot org was $1300.00 for the 8 year-120,000 mile one.

I guess you are putting less than 10k miles per year thus far.... but...

The Honda Warranties generally have a 'year' limit or 'mileage' limit, so you have to consider if you'll put enough miles on the PIlot to justify the cost.

In other words, IIRC, the extended warranties have a max of 8 years or 100k or so miles, all beginning from day of purchase. I haven't looked at the warranties lately from HC, but I think it would be safe to say that you would have about 5 years left or approximately 100k left if you buy the warranty.

I seem to recall that a 8yr/120k option was available, again all going back to the date of purchase. Whichever comes first...

I bought the warranty in 05 on my 04 Pilot for approximately 1000 dollars. 7 years or 100k miles, whichever comes first. I bought a warranty 'cause I tow a boat and camper somewhat frequently.

Default warranties

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the advice on getting a warranty. I will check with those folks on prices.

I wonder that maybe I would be better off to simply set the money aside and apply it to actual repair costs that may come up.

The car seems to be running well and I will keep it up and don`t drive the vehicle hard.

Guess Honda wouldn`t be offering the warranty unless that in most cases they will make money on the program.

Remember when I bought the vehicle and the sales folks were telling me how great the honda was and the finance folks were saying that I better buy the extended warranty. The impression they gave me was as soon as I got it off the lot the wheels would fall off.

Have a friend in the auto industry who told me that the parts in the pilot are better than those in the cadillace escalande. His company sells parts to both companies.

Thanks for the help.

Ask yourself what you think will go wrong with the Pilot that would cost you $2,000 out of your own pocket while you own it. I make the dollar figure higher than the cost of the warranty since there is probably a deductible involved.

You might come out ahead on the deal, but it is unlikely in my opinion. You could set that money aside and buy a newer model one year sooner than you would otherwise.

I receive at least 5 warranty offer letters each month. They wouldn't send them out to me unless it was a good deal for them.

I view these extended warranties as a gamble -- you are betting that your Pilot will cost more to service than the warranty costs, and the warranty underwriter is betting the opposite. Based on this line of thinking, I have typically not purchased extended warranties in the past, figuring that the number crunchers at the company offering the warranty are smarter than I am when it comes to statistics on repairs and risk vs. reward.

That being said, there are always exceptions. I did purchase an extended warranty back in the day for my 1994 Saturn, and it definitely paid for itself. Conversely, my father purchased an extended warranty for his 2000 BMW 323i (which is driven 20,000 hard miles per year), and only had to use it once for a $300 repair.

It really comes down to you -- do you get peace-of-mind knowing that your vehicle is covered no matter what happens, or are you a gambler who thinks that you can beat the house by ditching the warranty and going it on your own?

Actually, you are betting you can beat the house if you buy the warranty. They are the one who determine the odds of you winning.
