I was looking through my manual the other day, putting a schedule of maintenance that I had the tools to do and what I didn't have the tools to do. I was looking at the severe section and they recommend lubricating the hinges and chassis every 15000 miles. Then when you look at the standard wear schedule there is no mention of when to lube. So I assume that was left out by accident. I assume the schedule would be every 30000 miles for standard wear. This leads me to ask what is entailed with a chassis and hinges and locks lube? I assume a grease gun that I don't have and a particular type of grease that Honda recommends. Can anyone tell me what specific type of tools I would need?

I think what they mean by chassis lube is simply stuff like door hinges, hood hinges, latches, tailgate hinges, etc. Honda simply specifies multipurpose grease, so there is nothing exotic about it. And I don't think any of these points have grease fittings, so it's just a matter of smearing some grease on there, exercising the joint, and wiping off the excess. Some folks like to use some kind of penetrating spray, but this will leave only a light lubricant behind, so you'd need to stay after it.
Virtually all cars these days have sealed fittings for the chassis suspension components and there is no maintenance, severe or regular. - Mark |
