Angry Frustrated w/Maintenance

I took my 2006 Pilot EX-L with 34,000 miles in to the dealer for a few service items. I asked them to do a synthetic oil change, drain & fill differential and change the transmission fluid.

While there, I picked up their "Maintenance Guide". At 30K it suggests amog other things coolant replacement. My theory is to follow the maintenance minder. I am a severe driver in that I am in FL and tow a boat.

Dealer called suggesting I change the coolant. I have also looked at the Edmunds schedules.

WHO THE HE** ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO LISTEN TO?

The dealer is obviously trying to sell additional services. It is getting to the point where having service done is as bad as the car buying experience!

Follow the MM or the owners manual. Never ever listen to what the guys at the $tealer say, they're just out to rape your wallet. FYI, the coolant is serviced at 100K miles.

I know. I was just frustrated even though I knew it was coming.

Regarding the MM, when it calculates the oil life, how does it take into account that I use full synthetic oil? Does it actually measure the quality of the oil or ??

I don't believe there's any adjustment in the calculation. Honda states that synthetics must follow the same change intervals as regular oil -- at least that's the case in my 2005 owner's manual.

In my opinion it all depends on how long you plan to keep the vehicle. If you plan to keep it long past the warranty period then follow the recommended schedule.....if, on the other hand you trade every few years then change the oil, put gas in it and don't worry!

No, it does not sample the quality of the oil thought I seem to recall a BMW or similar that does do that and it not being uncommon to get 15,000+ miles per oil change.

It's too bad. Although I am providing premium protection using the synthetic, part of the advantage is the increased oil change interval. To some extent I am throwing money away by following the MM.

If you read and specify only the things on the list that Honda says, you'll save alot of money.

I had Boch do an oil change tire rotate at 375 $50. They wanted to do a bunch of nothings for another $120.

I said no.

That is exactly what I did. I had them change the oil, VTM-4 and the transmission fluid. At 34K I may have been a little late on the VTM-4 since I tow frequently.
