Default VTM-4 rear differential fluid????

Guys,

Im due this week for my maintenance and here is what it says on the manual.

Replace VTM-4 rear differential fluid at every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) up to 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or every 6 months, then every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 1 year. Only follow this schedule for rear differential fluid replacement if you use your vehicle for off-highway driving, trailer towing, or mainly in stop-and-go driving.

Di I need to replace this? I never use it off road, towing or anything, all soccer mom task (im a dad though).

If not now when? or never? Sorry Im noob on this.

I think you're reading the "severe" service schedule. In addition, there should be a "non-severe" schedule which also requires VTM4 flulid replacment, but at longer intervals. I could be wrong, but I don't think Honda says you can just leave it in indefinitely, even in soccer-mom service.

I'd follow the recommended non-severe schedule. If you have a 2006 or 2007, this means just doing it when the display on the instrument panel tells you so. On mine, it said I needed to change it at about 10K.

Follow normal service. First VTM change at 15K, then 30K, then every 30K thereafter.

Normal service for pre-06 model year is 15, 30, then every 30 after.

For models with the MNTN minder system just follow what the car tells you to do.

VTM-4 fluid is being use all the time when you are accelerate. Maintenance minder will tell you if you need to replace it or not. Follow the minder and you will be ok.

I had a instruction thread regarding VTM-4 fluid change. It's actually very simple. check it out.

Is the dealer doing anything else? $400 is way too much. The VTM-4 fluid and air filter change should be less than $100. The cabin filter takes a little more time (check the DIY thread) but should not be more than $100. Hopefully they're doing other stuff for you (i.e. oil & filter change, tranny fluid change, rotate tires, all the visual checks, etc.).

You should be able to bring it to the local service station or auto parts store and have them dispose of it. That service is free around here, not sure if that's true everywhere.
