Default Possible Recall of Honda Oil Filters

I was attempting to purchase Honda oil filters online, when the dealer I was working with suddenly informed me that a recall of these oil filters was just issued by Honda due to a defect in the thread that could cause oil leaks. He said that the recall affects 15400-PLM-A01, which I believe to be the Filtech-made filter.

I am going to check with my local dealer because I did purchase these oil filters recently and just installed one of them on my Civic hybrid and the second one was going on my Pilot. I wonder if these leaking oil filters was discovered as they investigated the recent CR-V fires?

Not sure what the implications are for those that already have these filters installed, but I will pass on what I am able to learn.

Here's the official bulletin:

Date
2/8/07

To:
All Honda Parts and Service Managers

From:
AHM Parts Technical Support Dept.

Re:
***IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY***

Part Number 15400-PLM-A01, Oil Filter

AHM Parts Division has been advised of a potential manufacturing problem with the oil filter listed below. During a short period of time the filter base plate threading equipment could have produced some filter base plates where the center pipe threads are not perpendicular to the base plate. This condition could cause the filter to develop metal-to-metal contact with the engine block mating surface without establishing a complete seal which could result in an engine oil leak.

The packaging lot number is located on the part number label of the case carton. It is in the lower right corner of the label and is preceded by the letters “JD”. The affected lot numbers are as follows: 07026, 07029, 07030, 07031, 07032, 07033, 07034

AHM is requesting all dealers to examine their inventory of 15400-PLM-A01 and return any filter in the affected lot number series to AHM as soon as possible using the OAR procedure detailed below.

Your cooperation in this effort is appreciated.

For what it's worth, I haven't seen a PLM-A01 filter in a long time.

Long time months or long time years?

I have 4 or so from HAW in my garage and I'm wondering if I need to check them. The first one was probably purchased mid-2004.

Thanks for posting the official notice.

Gee, I am SO glad that I stocked up on the A01 filters.

I have about 30 of them sitting in my garage right now.

But no leaks so far.................

If they have the affected lot numbers, I'll trade them out for you.

Is the A01 an older filter then?

Am I correct in assuming if a filter is installed in a vehicle, the cross-threading (if present) will generate an oil leak immediately? That is, should people worry about the filter on their cars right now?

No use, I do not have the original box, just the oil filters.
