Thumbs up Is 5W 30 OK?

I recently changed the oil in my 2005 Pilot. I used 5W-30 by accident rather than the recommended 5W-20. Is that ok?

Thanks for the help!

It's fine. Most view 5W-20 vs. 5W-30 as a subtle tradeoff between slightly better fuel economy vs. slightly better high temp engine protection. Either is fine and many dealerships use 5W-30 despite Honda's recommendation.

if you use 5W30 instead of the factory recommended 5W20 then if you 've an engine problem while under warranty, Honday may not honor it. just something to think about.

The word "may" here is a convenient escape, but practically speaking, the risk of a warranty denial because of 5W-30 oil use is essentially zero. Keep in mind that 5W-30 is the oil many Honda dealers use.

I use 0W/20 Mobil one just because I can and it is equivalent to the 5w/20 honda motor oil. (let's not debate synthetic vs dino oil again.)

Default couple of things

the oil viscosity between 5-20 and 5-30 is not very big. all the dealerships I have worked at use both. you have no need to be concerned about the viscosity unless you live in extreme cold weather or extreme hot weather due to the size of the oil passages and the thickness of the oil for proper lubrication.

Warranty... it is up to the dealer and not AHM to decide if its warranty if it is still in the mileage and time limits. If it is over then depending on your vehicle repair history they will goodwill it. AHM only gets involved if it is a major repair...trans/engine, then they want you to tear the part down before they say yes or no and if it is really bad they send a REP. Also AHM is more concerned about customer satisfaction than it is about price. If the tech says its bad or possibly bad then they just replace the part, no questions.

Unless the problem is so blatantly obvious that the owner caused the damage the problem will be warrantied.

The last thing is the dealer is on your side when it comes to warranty work. They get paid by AHM for warranty repairs so the more work the more money the dealer gets. The customer and the dealer have nothing to lose(except time) and everything to gain.
