Do a search on "egr" and you will find lots of information.

It's a known issue with 2003's

Not sure how common with later Pilots.

Also depending on your VIN number, there is a warranty extension on the EGR port clogging and EGR valve sticking for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

What is not covered on that warranty is cleaning the ports & passages under the plate on top of the manifold. Mine needed it. You really don't know until you remove the plate & look. Depends on how many miles & how crappy your fuel is. Ours is pretty bad around here.

I would offer them 1/2 hr. labor to clean that out, or do it yourself. If you're the slightest bit mechanical pick up a new gasket & do it yourself. Clean the plate & the six holes under the plate. Don't be alarmed by all the oil under there, they all have that.

Angry EGR Valve Replaced 36500 miles

I just bought a 2004 Pilot - just out of warranty at 36,500 miles. No warranty - as is purchase.

While driving it home the VTM-4 and check engine lights come on - a stop at a Honda dealer reveals EGR valve issue. $260 repair plus $114 for system cleaning...

A very disappointing start to my first time buying a Honda.

If this was a known problem why no warranty extension on the 2004 also?

Who did you buy it from?

As-Is is As-Is, but a conversation with the Honda regional rep might help.

It was not a Honda dealer. Although I had it serviced at one.

How could I contact the Honda regional rep?

I would start with the Honda dealer you went to.
Talk to the service manager.
Explain that you have heard from other Pilot owners that this has been a common problem hat Honda has taken care of it as a courtesy.
As if he could see if they can help.
If that goes nowhere, ask what day the Honda rep is in (they usually know) and explain that you would like to talk with him.
Be nice, as it is not his problem, since you did not buy it there, and it really is not Honda's problem since you bought it used/As-Is.
Maybe he will see this an an opportunity to gain a good service customer?
Talk about how you like getting dealer service.
Ask how often you should bring it in.
Seem like a really good return customer.
You know, Schmooze it!

Hi TedinOH :
'a stop at a Honda dealer reveals EGR valve issue'

as mentioned a few thread before you, the EGR has an extented warranty, my '03 also fixed under extented warranty from Honda, my basic earranty expired at that time.

By ictvuser 'there is a warranty extension on the EGR port clogging and EGR valve sticking for 8 years or 80,000 miles'

All original owners has aLetter from Honda, but you can just tell the Dealer about the warranty on EGR valve.

Good luck

But does that apply to the 2004's?

WARRANTY EXTENSION: EGR CONTAMINATION OR EGR PORT CLOGGING

Warranty Extension: EGR Valve Contamination or EGR Port Clogging May Cause DTC P0401, DTC P1491, or Engine Hesitation/Surge (Revised 7/20/2005) Cause DTC P0401, DTC P1491, or Engine Hesitation/Surge (Replaces 00-009, Odyssey Warranty Extension: EGR Port Clogging, dated March 4, 2003) BACKGROUND July 20, 2005

I would asume it is covered under your warranty, especially if you have the error code mentioned above, OR the Engine Hestitation/Surge (Revised 7/20/2005).

Just mention this EGR Service bulletin to the dealer, in a kindly friendly voice.

My VIN is out of range (obviously as it is a 2004). I have contacted American Honda about this and my coolant leak issue - we'll see what happens.

seen your comment on system cleaning. I have a 2003 Pilot 275 vehicles off the line out of the warranty extension. Danced around this one with the dealership and Honda Canada. My symptoms are the same as on the bulletin. Changed the Valve and still have symptoms not aware of the system being dirty. Please help with explaining how to go about said procedure.
