I changed the VTM fluid on my 05 Pilot tonight. Fairly easy job.
But...I bought a hand pump at Auto Zone to get the fluid out of the gallon jug. Worked good too. But how do you clean the pump afterwords? The internals looked sealed, and seemed to hold a fair amount of fluid as I disassembled the hoses afterwards. Or do you just wrap it up in a plastic bag to keep clean until the next time it's needed?BTW, I read once that it pays to drive the vehicle a mile or two, and recheck the VTM fluid level after the 1st drain/refill. I did this and added ended up adding another 3-4 ounces of fluid.

I have a dedicated pump for every fluid needing a pump. I simply plastic bag the end of the hose and it's good to go next time.
I've never checked the rear diff after a service, neither do my mechanic bil. Are you sure the vehicle was level when you change the fluid? It's a sealed unit, it has no place to go unless it's leaking. |

Going the dedicated route may be what I have to do. I don't want to contaminate the pump with anything...even "clean" water.
Yes, the vehicle was level. Just a drop or two of factory-fill fluid came out when I first opened the fill bolt. Refilled it until new fluid over flowed, tightened plug, drove around the block. When I reopened the fill bolt, none of the fresh fluid came out, so I pumped a little more fluid into the differential until it over flowed again. There is still one quart left in the gallon jug of new VTM fluid. |
