First Oil Change

Well, I was close to 7500 miles on our Pilot, so Saturday morning I decided to do the first oil change.

First thing I have to say is that it has got to be the easiest car that I've changed oil on. It took me about an hour to do it, but that included checking the air in all the tires (including spare) and topping off all the fluids. I think if I just did the oil change, I could've done it in 30-45 minutes.

The hardest part was getting the oil filter off. I swear they glued that thing on. I ended up using a strap wrench and many grunts to finally get it off.

My one mistake was that I ended up putting in 5 quarts of oil. I knew that the owner's manual says that it only needs 4.5 quarts, but I didn't realize I was pouring in the fifth quart until it was completely empty. No big deal, luckily. I checked the oil level (after letting it run for a while, then letting it cool off), and it's just barely above the full line (just covers it).

I also picked up 10 crush washers from the dealer. They charged me 30 cents each. FYI... they are identical to the ones that I got from the Acura dealer for my Integra... so my guess is that all Hondas use the same crush washer. I think Acura charges 70 cents each, so definitely worthwhile to get them from a Honda dealer if you own an Acura.

Why did you buy 10 crush washers when a new one comes with each Honda oil filter?

I don't use Honda (brand) oil filters.

My dealer doesn't include a washer with the filter; they charge for each item separately.

Nope, but close... I use Purolator Premium Plus (aka Quaker State or Advance Auto Parts). I use SuperTech as well.

I recently read that the Quaker State filters are now made by Fram, since the aquisition of Quaker State by Penzoil (Penzoil filters are manufactured by Fram). I read this at the following website, in which the page was written in 2000, so the info could be outdated. I had previously been buying Quaker State filters on the belief that they were manufactured by Purolator.

Amazing. I buy the Honda filters and they come shrink wrapped with one crush washer inside. Makes me wonder if your dealer is unwrapping, taking the crush washer out and selling the washer to make a few more pennies. Strange.

Shrink-wrapped? Shrink-wrapped?

Maybe your dealer is taking the filter out of the box, and shrink-wrapping a crush washer with it.

Regardless, neither of our dealers are giving anything away.

Even H and A Accessories charges 20 cents for a crush washer in addition to whatever they charge for a shrink-wrapped filter.

EDIT: It's been a while since I bought a Honda filter, so maybe they are shrink-wrapped. When I was buying them, they were boxed, and the crush washers were an extra charge, which I suspect at my dealer is still the case.

And Honda filters are made by Fram...............also some recommend that you simply turn your crush washer around instead of using a new one every time.

I have used my crush washer now 4x... yea I know it cheap enough, I actually have spares, but there isnt a single mark on the one that came with the first oil change. I guess if you really cranked down on the oil plug it would deform it... but I surely dont and you could not tell it from a new one

On my wifes Ody it doesnt take much to deform a crush washer.. there is no option but to replace it every time.

Yep, you're right... it is outdated.

If you contact Quaker State, they will tell you exactly who makes their oil filters... Purolator. I emailed their customer service two years ago with this question and got this reply:

Question:
"I noticed that your oil filters have recently changed color (from green to white). Does this mean that you have changed oil filter manufacturers? Who currently manufactures your oil filters?"

Response:
"The color change is a simple cost saving measure. Quaker State Filters are manufactured for us by Purolator. Thank you for your interest in our products."

In addition, numerous people have cut open Quaker State filters and found that they look almost identical to the Purolator Premium Plus filters.

Only some Honda oil filters are made by Fram. There are actually two different manufacturers that make Honda oil filters in North America: Filtech (owned by Toyo Roki) and Fram. The one I took off my Pilot was a Filtech.

I've reused crush washers before (turning them around). Most times the only way you can tell if it has been used is that it is scratched up a little. The one I took off was slightly deformed... probably tightened by the same guy who tightened the oil filter.

I figure it is worth the extra 30 cents.

Besides, I keep some of the better looking used crush washers... just in case I forget to get new ones and need a replacement.

Thanks for the clarification sjlee on who manufactures Quaker State filters. I can't find a supplier in my area for Purolator, so I guess QS is the next best thing.
