Question 1st service

While I am a few miles away from my 1st service, the dealer I purchased my Honda and the extended warranty through never mentioned anything re specific services...

I know from a Ford I used to own they had Service 1,2, 3, and 4 - and you would rotate through them ( again, ext. warranty ) - is this similar to Honda?

If you have the owners manual its all listed in there and what is performed under normal or severe conditions. I can post a copy if you dont have one but yes you will have simple, medium and advanced services as various intervals.

Don't mean to drift off from the last two posts...I have searched the topic, but need a direct answer.

I have had my pilot 5 months and have 4,500 miles on it. I really feel like it should be serviced at 3,000 like my old 4 cylinder 91 Accord. Why does the manual recommend 7,500 / 1year and the dealer keeps sending me letters telling me to come in for my 3,500 mile service. My parents own a 05 CRV (which has a smaller engine of course) and their manual also recommend a 7500 mile/6months service, but the dealer calls them as well. and that's a. What should I follow? I do have the Honda Care 7 year warranty on it, and I don't want to void it by not getting serviced regularly. Much Thanks

The first oil change for a Pilot needs to go a bit longer to about 5,000 or 7500 miles as there is an additive to help the motor break in. After this first change you can do it at whatever interval your comfortable with.

Is this programmed into the maintenance minder? Or, should I just do the oil change regardless of what percentage it says is left?

And, any thoughts about that range of 5,000 to 7,500? That's a pretty big range. Should I do it on the lower end or higher end?

Thanks!

The dealership will always send you reminders to come in sooner than what is recommended by the manufacturers (they want your business). It shouldn't affect your warranty if you abide by the owner's manual and ignore the dealership, but check the verbage on the extended warranty to make sure.

By the way, there are really only two service intervals for the Pilot... 3750 miles (severe) and 7500 miles (normal). Check your owner's manual to see which one applies to you.

I don't think the maintenance minder is not programmed differently for the first oil change and any subsequent ones. The maintenance minder system is just to remind you to do service, you don't have to strictly follow it.

As far as when to get the first oil change, check to see if you fall under the severe or normal maintenance schedule (check the owner's manual). If you are following the severe schedule, then go towards the lower end of the range. If you are following the normal schedule, then go towards the upper end.

I have a 2005 Pilot EXL, currently 4500 miles, bought end of August 2005 so it's about 6 months now. I live in Pittsburgh, PA which is pretty cold now in the winter - so I guess I would fall under the severe schedule?

Do I need to get my first service done now?

If it's severe now, do I follow the normal schedule come spring to fall when it is mild or warm weather?

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, you do not need to switch back and forth on which maintenance schedule to use... just stick with one all year round.

I'm in WI, and I plan on following the "normal" schedule, which means first oil change at 7500 miles.

I use 5,000 miles as my oil change interval. It is easy to remember and it is between the severe and normal service. The old 3months or 3,000 miles is from the fifties and sixties when oil technology and filter technology were both light years from what is out there today. If you drive many short trips a month below 5 miles is freezing weather or 10 miles in warmer areas. Have many days over 90F (32C), excessive stop and go driving. Hope this help.
