Default 30K maintenance? can regular mechanic do for less?

hello,

i have the listing of items that the honda dealer (freehold,nj) is supposed to do at 30k miles....

he also wants $450 bucks for it....

can a regular mechanic (someone i know for a long time) be able to do this?

or are there certain fluids/parts that only a honda dealer has access to?

thank you

I don't see why not as long as the mechanic uses the honda recommended fluids for the tranny and vtm-4.

Ask for an itemized list of what they are doing, then compare to the required list and get a new price for what NEEDS to be done.

DO NOT use these XXk service packages, they are just money makers for the dealership.

just spoke to a different guy now at freehold, nj honda and he quoted me $365....

said person i spoke to this morning for $450 was incorrect....

maybe if i wait a few more hours, it will be $99....

anyway, these are the main things done:

- change oil / oil filter
- change air filter
- change cabin pollen filter
- change differential (vtm4) fluid
- rotate tires

everything else is just "check this" and "check that".....

my mechanic can do all of this for much less as he'd only charge me for parts...maybe $100? not exactly sure yet....

freehold, nj guy didn't want to do just the above parts and give me a new price, said it was all or none for $365....

ok, some basic questions for you....

do i need those ramps to make the car higher to drain the oil and the vtm fluid?

regarding the cabin filter.... is that the sticky thread at the top of this forum? that alone looks like a 4hr job...

Here's a question. If the maintenance is not recorded in Honda's logs is it considered "not done" and does this have any effect on the warranty?.............i.e. if you do it yourself?

Keep the receipts for the products you use.

I use this for recording my own services in addition to the dealer. To answer your question though, my dealer tells me that as long as I have some record I am ok, I am sure this could be pushed either way, but I have always kept my own logs anyways, this just gives them access to it also.

- change cabin pollen filter
- change differential (vtm4) fluid

Wow, that seems awfully expensive.

inspections are free in NJ....provided by the DMV....but maybe they are not like the inspections that Honda would do.....

although they did have my car for 30mins....

If done right the inspections are a good idea, just wish they did not charge so much.

A quick check fore loose suspension parts, an inspection of the CV joint boots, and a check of the brake pad thickness are the critical ones.
